Tried hard but just couldn't finish it

I really thought I was going to enjoy this after seeing the trailer and watching some video reviews but it just ended up really repulsing me in almost every way. And not from the typical horror stuff, it just seemed that the director was literally trying to disgust me but in an unrewarding and annoying way. Many people have compared this movie to May, which is one of my favorite movies of all time but Excision has none of the qualities that make May such a great movie. I get that they were trying to make the girl unattractive but they went way too far, her fake caveman eyebrows made me think I was watching a bad SNL skit. The actress did a good job at portraying her character but I could barely stomach seeing her do almost anything because of her over the top repulsiveness.

I dunno, I really wanted this to work for me but everything just seemed a little off to me.

I don't think he's shallow, just not blind. I too found it incredibly difficult to watch that little freak, and her weird, irritating over-enunciation was doubly irritating.

You being equally shallow doesn't make him less shallow.

It wasn't that I didn't like her being dressed down, that's fine I just thought they over did it to an unrealistic extent and thus became a caricature that took me out of the movie. Honestly I've never even seen this actress in anything so I don't even have anything to compare it too, I just though they were laying it on a little too thick.

you need to finish the movie.

You don't need to finish the movie... it doesn't get better.
I agree with the bad caveman eyebrows, she was a caricature and totally not believable. Looked like the "before" in the teen movie where she ends up becoming the prom queen or something.
As for comparisons to May, this lacked the charm and sweetness of that movie. It was like a mix of music video ideas and a short film that was dragged out into a full length... I expected more from this one.

THANK YOU!! Exactly. All these people freaking out on me saying I'm shallow etc.. jeez take it easy, it's just not that good of a movie. Wanted it to be but oh well. A good example of a movie that starts off and you kind of hate it but actually does get way better and turns out to be awesome is Detention. That was great film but it does start off kind of off-putting, it just takes a little while for you to catch the rhythm of it.

There aren't many films where I haven't bothered finishing them once started but this was one. It was obviously desperately trying to shock, but just ending up being dull. & I tired of her "I'm SO weird" facial expressions

" not being able to look past an actress being "dressed down" from her normal attractive appearance is a pitiful excuse for not following through on a movie this good.

if you had said that some of her more elaborate dreams/fantasy sequences made you uncomfortable that might make sense, not everyone has the stomach for those kinds of scenes.

as for the comparison to May, I'd say they are similar in tone more than actual content."

So perfectly said on all three points!!!

I think Annalyne did an amazing job with her character, and if you watch through til the end, you'll appreciate her as an actress all the more. Her and Traci Lords. It's a gritty film at times, but it has it's reasons.

reply

Exactly! I think the movie did what it set out to do and did it very well. It's a far fetched, ridiculous caricature of a story that needs to be looked at in that light.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

When I tried to describe Excision to a friend, I said "It's like May, only good".

I guess tastes differ.

reply

Haha. At the time of watching "May" for the first time years ago, I thought it was great. After watching "Excision" tonight, I can honestly say "May" wasn't very good by comparison. Excision was a masterpiece.

Like others, I'd suggest you finish the movie, but not every movie is for everyone. I'm guessing you are not familiar "The actress" Annalynne McCord but give her a look in the film "Bad Girl Island" and you'll see how absolutely hot and sexy she can be...and then you'll have a new appreciation of her in Excision.

maybe you were in a mood or something. not half as bad as you are making it out to be. and like a lot of movies, the ending was the point.

reply

JL you may be right. I watched the whole thing and just couldn't get into it. Perhaps it wasn't subtle enough for my tastes, although blood and gore don't bother me, I don't think there was the "correct" mixture in this movie. To me it seemed to try to cram too many things into one movie. I guess I felt misled by the blurb about the movie.

But then again, that could just be my mood. I usually know what I want to watch, and have been searching for good new horror lately, but what I want is suspense and mystery, I think, so this didn't do it for me.

I saw May and remember liking it, but that was a long time ago. Just have to find the right movie for the right mood.

Well, yes, if you read in the blurb this was a horror film, your expectations will have been dashed and you will have been left disappointed. I too read the info box when it came on my TV saying it's a horror film, but not being a horror film fan, I watched it in spite of that, practically having to fight my instincts on it. (If you're wondering what actually made me watch it, it was that I saw a mini "trailer" run for it a few times before its TV showing, and the snippets they used were quirky and interesting enough to intrigue me! One of the snippets used in this TV trailer was the bit where she shouts to the skipping-rope girl across the road "That looks like fun!" but it was taken out of its context, so you didn't actually know she was shouting across a road to make herself heard, meaning it lent that perfectly innoccuous expression a strange nuance, making it look and sound subtly and wonderfully unhinged, which was of course, the perfect bit of foreshadowing for the entire film!)

Too late."

If the character repulsed you enough that you stopped watching, I'm sure the director would have been totally happy with that :)

I have nothing against violence/gore in movies if it is used to advance the plot but in this case, the violence was gratuitous and over the top. All of the scenes where she has fantasies about dead bodies were so unnecessary. The first sequence was interesting but after that it was like "we get it, she has sexual fantasies that involve dead bodies and blood." No need to continue illustrating this to the audience every five minutes.

This movie tried way too hard to be shocking and pervasive to the point where it ended up being downright corny.

The director clearly wanted to be shocking. When the fetus scene came on, I rolled my eyes and shut the movie off.

reply

Criminy I thought I was the only one. XD "May" is a far better attempt at trying to garner sympathy for a misfit whose loneliness and tendency to be around the wrong people results in her fragile psyche finally collapsing. Mainly because it wasn't so self important. This movie, I guess, aspires to slot itself next to John Waters's early work as "the next great shock fest." I wasn't shocked. Just disgusted. And I have a strong stomach for this kind of nastiness. And it wasn't just Pauline, it was the absence of ANY likable characters in this movie. Traci Lords as Mommie Dearest was the worst. My sympathies WOULD shift towards her character, as I would certainly act and feel this way if I had to put up with this *beep* from my daughter, but her robotic portrayal by the untalented Traci Lords couldn't generate any positive feelings towards her. The lil sis has only 1 defining character trait (her disease) and Dad is a non-factor. I DID finish this film. Trust me you missed nothing. The only thing I got from this was "there goes 90 minutes I'll never get back." Stick with "May."
