(SPOILERS-SPOILERS-SPOILERS!!) Patsy and Delia

Do you think Delia's mother figured out their relationship?

She said something along the lines of, You can upset me, you are a grown woman and have always done things your own way, but don't do anything that will cause an uproar.

I think she got it, I really hope that they continue to be able to be a couple, they are very brave for their time.

I know that gay men were prosecuted at that time, was the same true for women? And if they go to Paris and act as a couple, what was France's position on homosexuals at that time?

reply

Yeah... I get the feeling she's known for quite some time.

By law, lesbians have never really been a thing - actually some people thought it couldn't possibly exist, so they'd face no legal ramifications, although if it did come out it would probably have a massive impact on their careers. So, yeah, unlike gay acts, lesbian acts have never been illegal. I think it was because it was so 'vulgar' or something?

Not sure about France though.

Same-sex relationships between women were never illegal in Britain because when Queen Victoria signed the Bill outlawing homosexuality, she refused to believe that women could do such things, and refused to sign if they were included.

This is a myth. It was stated in an episode of QI that Queen Victoria was never asked to approve any such legislation.

I wondered about this too! To me, it seemed like Delia's mother had figured it out - does anyone know for sure?

reply

I think that she's a perspicacious sort of person, and has worked it out. I think that her slightly brusque attitude towards Patsy after Delia's road accident indicated that she had her suspicions back then. Now, she knows.

Her priority is avoiding exposure and scandal, I think she's accepted that she's powerless to change anything. Her message is, "if you must be with her, be discreet".

reply

Yes, it appears her mother knew.

Remembering way back to the previous series when they were getting a flat together, the mother also made a knowing comment at that time.

So, this wasn't the first time she hinted that she knew about their relationship.

I was left with the impression back then, when she was insisting on her coming back to Wales, aside from the recovery period, that mum was really trying to get Delia away from Patsy.

It had that very strong vibe of trying to separate Patsy and Delia, as though that would "solve" the "problem."

There was a strong sense that there was more to mum's concerns about Delia living in London than being so far away from home.

I believe Mrs Bubsys suspicion really began at the lunch/tea when Patsy was really adamant that Delia could rent a flat and be fine back in London. One could totally understand why her mom would want Delia back in Wales after all she went through and mom and dad being totally worried about her. But she relented and allowed her to move into Nonnatus house knowing Patsy would also be there.

Then the next time we see the 3 together she has had time to put the pieces together. Patsy's distraught state at the hospital, the letters, and then finally Delia bringing Patsy once again to lunch and Patsy telling her their plans for Paris.

And Patsy speaking for them as well.
