Dull or scintillating?

Although generally well-received, the critics seem to disagree about this.

What do you give this? Thumbs up or down?

reply

Up. I came out of the movie feeling like I actually understood abstract art and what those artists are doing. If nothing else, it's a nice refutation of the old "my kid could do that."

That said, I'm a self-taught art appreciator; people who understand already understand abstract art might have a different reaction. But I loved watching him work.

Very helpful reply, thanks.

To hear my own Mother say WOW a few times during this film. Tells me the critics that seem to talk down about this film, are very wrong. They are probably mad that they weren't interviewed for the film, and therefore have to talk down about it.

reply

I'm not sure who you mean. This film was almost unanimously praised.

Nice breakdown, bluesdoctor - tend to agree with most of what you say. I read Richter as less remote than shy and a little ill at ease with the whole process.

All I can say is...

Get 5 unknown people to do similar works. Then line them all together with Gerhard's paintings, and ask professionals to point out Gerhards work.

They will get it all wrong and won't know which one is his. Meaning, there is no art to this form of "art", and yes, anybody can smear a plank of wood around. Even a kid.
