Thor hangs his hammer on a hook.

Near the end, Thor goes to the apartment and hangs his hammer on a coat hook. Should this have ripped the hook off of the wall? Is there some setting on the hammer that lets Thor adjust the weight? If there was a coat behind the hammer, forget about ever having access to the coat again (until Thor removes the hammer).

What prevents others from lifting Mjolnir has nothing to do with weight, it's not impossibly heavy. It's magic/an enchantment that prevents others from being able to lift it.

Agent Ward: I don't think Thor is technically a god.

Hill: Well...you haven't been near his arms.

Correct - it's actually incredibly well-balanced. According to Vision anyway.

So, let's say Jane Foster is driving, with Thor in the passenger seat, and she parks her car in front of a fire hydrant, and Thor leaves his hammer in her car. Will it be impossible to tow her car?

reply

No. It is magical, therefore it responds to the will of the person who wields it. That is why when Thor hung it from the hook, it didn't tear the hook off the wall. And, when he placed it on Loki's chest, it nearly crushed Loki.

The Vision mentioned that the hammer's balance is amazing.

The hook was worthy

According to the comics, Mjolnir's worthiness enchantment does not work on machines nor inanimate objects, thus Thor is able to hang his hammer on a hook without trouble.

This is honestly one of my favorite moments in the entirety of the MCU. It's such a little moment, but it cracks me up every time. I read somewhere that it was improvised by Hemsworth too.

I like the hook moment, but my favorite is when Jane's cell phone rings.
"It's not mine" Thor
"The reception is amazing!" Jane

Steve Rogers: But if you put the hammer in an elevator...

Tony Stark: It would still go up.

Steve Rogers: Elevator's not worthy.

You guys are all wrong. Have none of you actually read the comics? If you did, were you paying attention? Not only do you have to be worthy, (high karma and positive popularity) there is also a superhuman strength requirement of being able to bench-press/weightlift at least one ton. The hammer's made from Uru after all; it should've ripped the hook right out.

reply

Never read the comics. Just quoting 'Age of Ultron' for comedy's sake.

What's true in the comics is not necessarily always going to be used/carry over into the films

Vision comments on the weight in Age of Ultron and Thor remarks that it's weighted to give good balance.

The MCU version is clearly not that heavy compared to the comic version.

Isn't Jane Foster Thor now? She's just a human until she picks up the hammer. pretty sure she can't normally lift a ton.

I agree with what one of the previous posters said about this scene... Thor hanging Mjolnir on a hook is one of my favorite moments in the Thor series and probably entire MCU. Leaving the magic/science behind it out of the discussion, the way Thor just casually (and in a politely serious manner) hangs his mighty powerful hammer on a regular coat rack is too funny. It gets me every time.

It’s a small yet humorous moment. It’s also apparently true that this was improvised by Hemsworth between takes as he wants playing with the hammer, so knowing this does make me appreciate this moment so much more. :)

How would it work if the Hammer was hanging from a rope, and an unworthy tried to take it?
if they try to catch it it keeps going, but would it hang and not sway or drop to the floor?

reply

I believe we saw that in Thor with the guys in the trucks trying to pull the hammer with a rope tied to their trucks.

I don't think the comics have ever clearly defined the rules on where the enchantment ends. An elevator would lift it up if you pressed the button but you wouldn't be able to pull it with a rope. If the hammer was on a coffee table would it make the table immovable by humans? In Age of Ultron we didn't get to see them try moving the table. The MCU is not likely to give those kinds of answers simply because the MCU does not know the rules itself.

I think a person can't lift the hammer in itself to use. As why wouldn't the hammer go through Loki when Thor put it on him to hold him down. It stays where you put it on a place.
