Great Film, Great Fun

Thor The Dark World was everything I was hoping for and quality entertainment from opening scene to the last. The director presents the entire film in a way that can be savored. Many aspects are just plain old fun kick-butt action scenes. It’s a perfect blend of action and humor and yet it still remembers to pack a heart. The pacing was perfect even though I would've liked to have seen more quality time spent between Jane and Thor. That would've added more credibility to the chemistry and longing they both display for each other. Besides a few minor shortcuts in story, this film packs quite a punch and is every bit as good as I hoped it would be.

Just like Iron Man, they played both sides of the fence perfectly. You need know nothing about the character to enjoy the film yet the fans were respected and spotted the little things that service the story but don't really register to non-fans. There are heavy ties to the events of Avengers but since everyone saw Avengers, that’s a good thing.

I think this sequel is very well written and proves the character and the mythos have layers to explore. They can't jam everything from the past forty years in to one film but they delivered enough smarts to go along with the spectacle to be sure.

It's been a flat out great year for Marvel. Anyone saying that Iron Man 3 isn't just as great as this film is flat out lying.

reply

I very much enjoy Thor:TDW but hated Iron Man 3. Why is that is impossible in your mind?

You hit like a vegetarian!

reply

Anyone that hated IM3 wanted to hate it going in because no true film fan with at least half a brain would not like that film.

I accept your surrender.

reply

At least the Marvel fans didn't have a Mandarin burr up the butt with this film.

reply

ridiculous! I wanted to like Iron Man three, in fact I saw it on my birthday! I was expecting big things after the greatness that was The Avengers and was left bitterly disappointed. TDW is a decent film, I wouldnt say it was great but at least they got most of the basics right and it was an enjoyable ride. IM3 was all over the place in comparison.

reply

I went in excited from having seen the trailers, that was it. I found IM3 a decent movie, but not as good as the rest of the MCU. I came out of Thor 2 going: WOW! This was Avengers-level good!

Will a 22 MPH wind matter in the 4th quarter?

Thor works on so many levels. It meets its toughest challenge and that is to make its super powerful blond godlike lead character relatable and spark a connection to the audience. For all the action extravagance and adventure, a surprising connection occurs here. This certainly isn’t some wild video game popcron flick. It also packs the perfect amount of comedy and connection. It’s what Marvel does best, give us heroes with flaws.

reply

That's what I like about Marvel. They focus on quality first and let the box office take care of itself. "Build it and they will come." Make a great film and the word of mouth will get butts in the seats. That's exactly what is happening here.

The numbers speak for themselves.

Updated numbers...

How did it add 3 million more domestic after that?

reply

It's still running in the dollar shows. Capital is capital.

As a teacher and a psychologist, I know exactly how good the writing is in this film. For an adventure movie, everything plays out perfectly. It's rich entertainment.

I accept your surrender.

I dare anyone to name a more entertaining film that has come out in the last three months.

reply

A smile is the universal welcome.

reply

I agree, it was a pretty good film, as usual courtesy of Marvel. I liked the first one too, where that was just an introduction and now this one is an expansion of Thor's universe, at least in my opinion. It shows that just like in the Marvel comics, there's other things out there besides Asgard and Earth, and seeing other realms was kinda neat. And Loki's character speaks for itself, no words from us needed.

My only real problem with the film was that the ending was a bit anticlimatic. Other than that, it gets an 8/10 from me.

TDW deserves every box office buck. It may be the most I enjoyed a film all year.

reply

I just saw Catching Fire and that is a worthy sequel but I really did enjoy this film more. Thor just delivers a better all around film.

reply

Better than fish on Friday?

reply

How was the ending in any way anticlimatic?

I loved that Thor saved the nine realms and that Jane would rather die with Thor then leave him to be harmed when he was laying there KO'd. Also, placing Loki on the throne was a GREAT payoff.

reply

I guess I should've said the ending fight was kinda anti-climatic. I was expecting more of an epic Mjolnir-given beatdown by Thor instead of Malekith getting crushed by his giant ship.

reply

After all this time it's still true.

reply

I think most people would agree with you about the film. I can"t think of any major flaw except maybe more development for Malekith.

reply

Underuse isn't really a flaw. The movie knew what it wanted to stress and it did so.

reply

Everything is so crisp in this film that I don't see how they could have made it better.

reply

Everyone has to admit that the reason why it's such a great film is that it perfectly plays off what has come before it.

reply

That's why it made a lot of money.

reply

Know in your heart that this is the best movie of the fall. We couldn't conceive of a greatness if none had ever happened.

reply

Don't you know that Fun is forbidden at the movie. All Hail Lord Killjoy.

reply

That's why Clooney and Bullock had to go in to space and have NO fun at all. Just spin and die.

reply

Alomost like Open Water but with a huge CGI budget???
