This or Hugo ?

Which one is better ?

Hugo is a superior film in every way.

story wise, i think both films are weak - I love the book that T.S. was based on but it translated to a movie somewhat lifelessly. Hugo is a mess of a story- there are elements that are great but overall it would have been more interesting if it were a biopic of Georges Méliès and the Hugo character were minimized or completely absent.

As far as the use of 3D... the clear winner is T.S. In T.S. the shots were framed/ edited in a way to let you appreciate the depth in each frame- expertly filmed for a 3D experience. Huge was arrogantly filmed and wasn't created for the average cinema goers 3D awareness in mind. Starting hugo out with a super extended one take shot with a ridiculous amount of movement was a really bad call, it takes eyes about 15 minutes to really get 3D, by throwing viewers right into it is both disorientating and nauseating. Heck, even James Cameron knew that and started out Avatar excellently with the water drop floating in space.

Hugo, by some distance. But that's only testament to its brilliance because Spivet is still a pretty good film.

Hugo. But I do think T.S. Spivet is a good movie, being very endearing and creative with a lovely visual flair in the use of 3D and the lovely natural vistas. But it stumbles quite badly in the final act and ends flat because of that. But there's some wonderful movie-making here.

NOW TARZAN MAKE WAR!

reply

Both :)
Seriously, objectively Hugo's better, however I haven't felt the same way since I'd first watched Hugo and I consider Hugo the best Scorsese film and probably the best film of 2011. And, like Hugo, I seriously can't imagine watching it NOT in 3D (and that's saying something, as I generally dislike 3D!)

I liked and enjoyed "T.S. Spivet" much more.

The story has more elaboration and witty details (the humor is more ready-witted), the pacing is more agile and the acting is more charismatic.

Hugo for americans, Spivet for europeans :-)

Hugo.

This. By far. Hugo never got me into it. I found it to be an empty, soulless, unfunny movie.

reply

yeah, same here. plus i did not like the protagonist in hugo. pretty annoying little dude.

reply

This.
Hugo just didn't work that well for me as a story.......and i'm American.
I saw this movie today and don't think it is a kids' movie at all.
gorgeous cinematography, too.
