shareOn the one hand, I agree that there is a habit of portraying Westerners as "1 dimensional villains" in Chinese cinema.
On the other hand, I do not recall China invading south England and taking a major trade port by force, making it part of China for 100 years.
In other words, I think they have a bit of a legitimate grudge against Europeans. Much as I imagine Tibetan cinema will, one day, not be very kind to the Mandarin Chinese.
Just food for thought.

HK Cinema didn't fare too bad under British rule. Their movie industry has started to suck recently. Wondering why that is?

Hollywood has given us such rich and cultural depictions as "evil Chinaman" and "evil Arab" for decades and it's still ongoing, so a little similar BS in the opposite direction probably won't kill anyone.
Also, you kind of answer your own question: Chinese movies are mainly concerned with Chinese people because the movies, the people who make them, the people who watch them and the cultural milieu in which they exist are....... Chinese.
American movies are full of Americans, and, oddly, I've noticed that there's lots of Frenchies in them French films...
Yes, hollywood has done this, but not to the extent these martial arts chinese movies have done. If you watched enough, i know i have, you would know that the chinese most of the time always depicts foreigners as 1 dimensional bad guys. The Ipman movies are a very good example of it. 1 dimensional japanese soldiers and 1 dimensional evil british boxer. I don't care if they're meant to be portrayed as the antagonist, just make sure they have some form of "layer".
shareFirst, Hollywood DOES do this to the same extent, if not more, in almost every film genre. Secondly, most martial movies including the Ip Man franchise are set in a period where foreigners WERE doing horrible things to the chinese! The japanese have invaded china many many times and when the japanese go to war they treat everybody else sub-human.
At least now you know how foreigners feel when they watch the typcial Hollywood movie.

Wu Jing directed Wolf Warrior, a kind of fun, kind of sucky military thriller with evil mercenaries... then there's Wrath of Vajra, which seems to feature multiracial Chinese soldiers who all speak Putonghua.
And if they're Chinese soldiers, that means they're good guys, right? Does this override their "racial handicap"? (<HST phrase)

Sweet, I'll check them out. I'm a lover of foreign movies but it annoys me sometimes when they make the foreigner bad guys while they do the whole "for my nations pride" crap. But yes, this applies to American movies that do this as well.
