What does Butch say?

I'm having trouble understanding what Butch says to Arlo when he's telling the story about the crocodiles. He says something like, "wasn't no way I was..." and then I can't get it. He goes on to say " I wasn't ready for dying that day". This is a lovely movie. The only problem I had was with Thunderclap eating the critter. That may have been a little too much for small children.Otherwise, I loved it.
