Dull script

Was very excited to see this, but the plot seemed like every other film. And most of the script was arlo just screaming, yelling spot, or howling between the two main characters. Although I think it's great for younger children, usually pixar films have a lot more entertainment for adults to enjoy along with it, and I think this film lacked creativity. Very impressed with the visuals though.

Before it came out someone said they hoped it turned out like WALL-E and the characters just keep their mouths shut for the most part.

It would have been better if it was like that, I think.

the landscapes were nice... that's legitimately the only good thing in this movie. the dinosaur design was pretty bad, the voicework was crap for the most part (the choice to give most of the characters exaggerrated southern accents was terrible) Arlo was a super annoying character. what else? the journey felt short, there were no truly memorable scenes, nothing about this felt Pixar but rather Pixar knockoff, etc.

objectively bad movie, even if you use the excuse "it's for kids."

It was a mess. There was no clear message or moral. Arlo's father tells him that he can make his mark is by killing a living creature (how is that "bigger than yourself"?), then loses his life needlessly while trying to chase the "critter" down....to kill it. Then in Arlo's dream toward the end, his father tells him "you're me and more" in response to Arlo's wish to save Spot's life. Wtf?

I also get the feeling that the Pet Collector was the director's idea (he voiced it and helped write the script). It wasn't funny, interesting, or engaging; it's like he told the rest of the writing staff "this is going to be hilarious" and they were too scared to tell him differently.

Yep.
