This movie is criminally underrated....

I loved it when I first saw it and am now watching it on HBO and it's even better on second viewing.

Best movie of 2013 for me.

I agree. If I remember correctly, this movie was competing with a lot of action movies at the time in theatres. I chose to see other things in the theatre. I finally got a chance to see this on hbo and I wasnt disappointed. A quality movie like this has longevity...the theatres may be packed for summer franchise movies but not many watch after it leaves theatres. A quality movie like this can be watched over and over and have life for years to come.

Good stuff. Saw it for the first time on HBO today. Loved it.

It's a movie I missed during award season, one of the few. Just watched it on HBO. Very good. In fact, damn good. The actor who played Lauda should have been nominated. And surprisingly hemsworth did an excellent job.

I looked up all the info On this movie after, and it looks like it was pretty true to what happened. Hunt died from a heart attack at 45. Wow. Wonder if his hard life with possibly drugs and drinking caught up with him.

Wonder if his hard life with possibly drugs and drinking caught up with him.

Almost certainly. If anything, Hunt's excesses after retiring from racing were even greater and he suffered bouts of depression and alcoholism (apparently downing two bottles of wine during his first stint as an F1 commentator for the BBC). However although it didn't surprise anyone, his death was still considered deeply sad, as by 1993 he appeared to have turned his life around: he'd given up smoking and drinking, and was in a happy relationship. He suffered a fatal heart attack only hours after proposing to his partner, Helen Dyson.

I agree. Love this movie. In some scenes, like those in the rain in the final race in Japan, the photography is awesome. And I don't care about car racing, didn't even know what Formula 1 was, but that speaks to the power of the human drama in this movie.

For me, this was my second favorite movie of 2013. I'd put "Prisoners" first, another movie neglected by the Oscars.

I was blown away. Fantastic film. I haven't looked, but this should have at least had a best cinematography nomination.

I wish I had seen this in the theatre. Great film. 9/10

It was a very good film that might have been a little off track pardon the pun. It's just very hard to film a movie about the mid 70's and catch the spirit of the whole racing scene. Howard as always did a find job and even more kudo's for even taking up the task in the first place!

There's no more Hollywood anymore, there's just a bunch of banks

I saw it opening day in a theater, with kick-ass sound & all. It was incredible. Then I took my husband & he loved it. Watching now on HBO for about the eighth time total. I have my piddly surround sound on at home again but it still sounds fabulous. HIGHLY underrated film!

I followed Ron Howard on Twitter throughout filming & editing and it was such a treat to see what he was posting, along with pictures to boot. I just did the same with his next release, In The Heart of the Sea....cannot wait for that to come out. I'm from Cape Cod & the story really resonates with me as it is about a whaling ship from Nantucket. Hemsworth stars in that too. :)

Just watched it for the first time this weekend. Phenomenal flick. Such an awesome juxtaposition between Hunt and Lauda. Both actors were on point. Loved the score and tone of the entire film.

Can't believe this flew under my radar for so long.

I really wouldn't say it is underrated since it is still at 8.2/10 on IMDB and #155 on the IMDB Top 250 of all time. The funny thing is that the horribly overrated (at the time) American Hustle has slowly dropped to being a 7.4/10 and out of the top 250 after being rated higher than Rush initially.

It was just a shame that it didn't get more award recognition while the then overrated American Hustle did that year.

reply

Awards wise it was underrated, especially for Daniel Bruhl who really captured the essence of Niki Lauda to a tee.

I'm really surprised he didn't even get nominated.

I agree. I saw Rush when it came to the cinemas. I had watched and waited in the production faze in anticipation and it didn't disappoint. Loved it.

American Hustle though, I finally got round to seeing it only the other day and I can't understand all the awards and the fuss over it. The movie The Sting was much much better and even the British TV series Hustle is much better and smarter. In both you actually like and care about the outcome of the main characters.

Criminally underrated is right. It was an amazing movie!

Second viewing, this time full, on HBO. Initial reviews were so-so and I was not compelled to see it on the big screen. But, it's quite good indeed.

First time I watched it from Redbox I think, was blown away. Now that it's on HBO I'm watching it over and over. It's a masterpiece
