Incredible how disorganised the pits stops were

When you watch F1 these days you'll see a pit stop where they change all 4 tyres and sometimes more in under 5 seconds. In this film the mechanics during the pit stops seem to spend at least twice that time just staring at the car deciding what to do!

I thought this was probably artistic licence on the part of the film makers to slow things down and add some drama, but then I looked on Youtube and it really was that chaotic! Here's Hunt's from that deciding race in 1976:

A lot has changed since then though hasn't it?
F1 used to be so dangerous it was ridiculous. You hear him at the start of the movie giving the stats on death rates.
Well Nikki helped to implement some of the regulations and safety features which led to F1 being such a close race.
Imo, it's when F1 started getting boring, but I agree too many people were dying. Today you hardly see any deaths from it.
So pit stops have gotten quicker, lots of things have changed. Instead of doing the lap 2 seconds quicker than your opponent, you're lucky to gain 0.01 of a second. That's down to the line.
Back in the day, they did what they could, but it's totally different to today's pit crews that fire out a while change in a matter of 3/4 seconds.

The whole of F1 was quite amateurish back then compared to how it is now, but that's also true for a lot of professional sports.

very interesting. thanks.

That's nothing! As disorganized as F1 pit stops were then, check this out...

For some reason, the film flips from the crash onwards, hence the reason it looks like they're going the wrong way, but where the cars start the race from is also the pit lane. Back then, it was literally a lane!!!

A lane on the start/finish straight, where most of the crowd are condensed. The crash was caused when a Jag he was following pulled across to get into the pit lane. Levegh swerved to avoid as he gunned it down the start/finish and, well...that there is the reason why Mercedes pulled out of motorsport for many years and have only recently come back to F1.

But just think of that, doing a full service and driver change in pits that were nothing more than a lane at the side of a live track!!!

Right? And it's not like it's even a slow section or anything. Madness!

...then whoa, differences...

The in race record for changing all four tyres is 2.1 seconds. They can literally change all four tyres on the car faster than you can say "change all four tyres on the car."

The Red Bull team apparently has recorded a time of 1.8 seconds in practice.

Yeah there's a slight difference there isn't there? Loved the guy with the jack/lever at the front struggling to get it lifted. Those guys needed to get organised!

F1 circa 2018 is completely different from the world captured in Rush. Top teams today have billion-dollar budgets, engineering technology beyond that found in jet fighters and are professional almost beyond definition. I remember going to the US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen NY in the 60s and seeing the Ferrari mechanics driving the racing cars out of the garage in the small town of Watkins Glen and up the hill leading to the racing complex on the same dirt roads we spectators were using. Maurizio Arrevivabeni would have a stroke if he saw that today.

PS One of the reasons why pit stops are now so fast is because refueling has been banned.

Billion dollar budgets?

LMFAO!

😂

Ferrari only spends half that, moron.
