I don't know if it's intentional, but...

They're playing up the comedic aspects. Watch the international trailer. That's way closer to the actual tone of the film.

It has much more of a buddy/adventure tone than horror, but there's also some deeper character/philisophical stuff in there too.

If done right, horror comedy could be a good genre, like for example the Chucky movies
