Copycat of the Talented Mr. Ripley?

Anyone feels the same?

reply

No, it's another story in roughly the same genre, by the same author. But the people are quite different, though the setting isn't too much so. And this film is a character study with noir elements. TTMR is also a character study, of a psychopath, but it's more of a thriller. I admit the differences might be subtle. If you watched them both side by side you would see it right away, I think.

This film is no more like TTMR than it is like STRANGRS ON A TRAIN, which is also by Patricia Highsmith. She was fascinated by male characters of a similar sort. But this story is more subtle in terms of characterization. Complete psychopaths are simpler to draw.

I watched TTMR not long ago. Probably Matt Damon's best early performance, and lots of other good characterizations, but I think this one is just a bit more complex.

All fine films, though.

Most definitely.

They're based on books written by the same author, similar kind of genre of mystery/suspense with characters who are conniving..not surprising it has a similar feel to it.

reply

Yes but the two books aren't similar.

reply

No.

Chester McFarlane isn't any thing like Tom Ripley and this story is quite different from that of TTMR.🐭

Copycat of the Talented Mr. Ripley?

Clearly, the author of The Talented Mr. Ripley should sue the author of The Two Faces of January for plagiarism.

reply

That was pretty funny.

reply

Let's see... Hmm... you might be onto something there... actually no.
