Oscar chances?

i know that this type of movie hardly get any recognition by the academy, but i think a least best cinematography and best actress in supporting role for Jena Malone, would be very deserving.

Nope, won't get any nominations. It's fortunate it'll be forgotten by the time the awards season comes around, actually, since that'll protect it from the embarrassment of Razzie noms. There are some benefits to being obscure. :)

reply

This wouldn't get any razzies

Did you see a lot of the reviews?

reply

Yeah and they were OK

reply

If you define "okay" as being ripped apart. The critics did to the movie what Ruby and company did to Jesse.

Quite a few mentions by critics and movie analysts on the cinematography and score. Nominations and eventual winners, of course, depend on the competition also.

I see a lot of films, and really only one this year edges it out for cinematography imho: The Light Between Oceans. Cafe Society is surprisingly strong in its contrast between old Hollywood and NYC, but I'd say slightly below TND and TLBO. Many more films to go, with those emphasizing cinematography usually showing up in the last part of the calendar year. Finally, the Academy has been moving away from epic landscapes (such as Legends of the Fall and The English Patient in the 90's) toward unconventional styles like Birdman, and TND fits the latter characteristics - with a low budget.

The original score/soundtrack has been universally praised. Some have referred to it as being its own 'cast member'. The last and only winner with an electronically-clad sound was The Social Network. While the Academy would be reluctant to do this again for a film not expected to go for best pic, I'd be very surprised if it does not at least get a nomination.

As much as many of us loved the supporting cast, the numbers of deserving actresses in other films would make that a very low percentage consideration for TND.

Art direction, costume design, sound would be considerations also. Winners of these categories, however, are often from best pic nominees.

In summary - cinematography and original score/soundtrack look like the reasonable chances for nominations. From there, who knows?

Soundtrack will likely get a nod, but probably won't win, there's also Hacksaw Ridge coming out soon and it has Oscars written all over it. Perhaps a sweep.

reply

The Soundtrack definitely deserves a nod, but i doubt it will get one. The film is too depraved for the Oscar Voters tastes and will probably be neglected altogether. Best Score nominations will likely go to all the event/period films.

Only cinematography. Nothing else really.

If It Follows didn't get any Oscar Noms for cinematography or soundtrack. I doubt The Neon Demon will too.

reply

Please, no Oscar nominations for this abomination.. I'll never watch the Oscars again!

It has zero chances of getting any nominations, apart from MAYBE something in the art department.
