The worst part about this movie was Fannings character.

I have not seen enough of her movies if any but wasn't impressed with her acting. Mediocre at best so why is everyone amazed by her in this movie? they kept making remarks about how special she was but apparently Fanning could not sell her character at all because i was left wondering what exactly was so amazing about her. Yeah she is pretty but just having a pretty face does not make a girl special and "like the sun" or whatever crap the other model said. Personally I like all the other characters so much better than her and they were so much more believable.

Well,I completely disagree, she nailed her character,If you don't see that, you probably didn't understand the whole movie, and beauty is a question of perception,i look to her and i see a very beautiful girl, and is very deserved her status in the movie,Well we probably have differnt tastes anyway.

Elle Fanning is not just beautiful;she is not just gorgeous;she is beyond that.

Man, I could careless about her before this film, but honestly... she was really great. ALL of the performances were great. Elle and Jenna especially. Elle made me a fan with this.

I believe that Jesse won in the end.The Demon consumed her flesh but her spirit lives forever.Jesse knew that in order to save her soul from the Demon she must sacrifice her body. The Demon was afraid of Jesse. She represented Hope and Innocence. The Demon tried to possess her spirit but the demon failed. So the devil consumed her body but her innocent soul lives forever. That's how I see the end of the movie.

reply

Nope, she lost big time.

reply

Agreed. She took a hard L

I'm not sure if her character was supposed to be so one dimensional or if it was the actor.

Either way she was a very unsympathetic protagonist whom I ended up not caring about or being shocked by her fate like I was supposed to be.

I think Refn often times makes characters that are to reflect the viewers true self. I found myself still sympathetic for Jesse at the end of the film, because I realized she was only being a naive 16 year old who had no parents or guidance to guide her in any good direction. Instead she was surrounded by narcissistic people with very vain and hollow ideals and goals. I saw her as becoming just like the people she was around and her punishment for turning on her purity was death. The other girls were mostly lost causes to begin with. Very corrupt. But oddly I found them likable as well.

I love that Refn makes all of his protagonists very flawed people, as that is a reality in this world.

I also read a theory that Jesse was an angel, The Moon was God and the 3 other girls were Demons. When Jesse started to become corrupt it's like God allowed her to be killed by the Demons to bring her back, as to not to be like the people who surround her. And when Ruby is looking out at the moon and bleeding out, it's like she's send Jesse back to God. Like Ruby is Satan and this is her world.

Elle Fanning is amazing. She truly is.

I loved the film, but I would have also preferred a different lead. She did not have anything special to me, unless the special thing was only that she was new to the scene and had not completely lost her innocence?

The one standing out instead throughout all the film, was Abbey Lee.

reply

This is of course a matter of taste but I thought she was the blandest and most boring out of all the characters (looks and character). Did not see what the fuss was about

reply

I prefer Abbey Lee, but Elle Fanning was pretty awesome as well.

I agree that Elle Fanning was not right for that part. Personally, I felt that Bella Heathcote and Elle should have had their roles reversed. I had a hard time believing that Elle was the one that had the "thing" that everyone else was wanting. I did not really believe anything that Elle did. I felt that she didn't quite nail the part. I too was left wondering what was so amazing about her. I did not see her as anything particularly special. Certainly not anything that warranted the reactions she got from people. I too felt that the others were more believable.

Same, I found it distracting.
