Spoiler: Those swastikas in the final scene...

I thought this was pretty in-my-face when i first saw it, but none of the people i was with even registered.
what do you think it means?

someone mentioned this was a pattern popular in the 60s and 70s, but more swastikas are superimposed on the right side in a blurred focus thrown image.

omg you need to stop the insanity of trying to find meaning on every single thing.

reply

haha, ok so obviously the filmic arts is lost on you. go watch Spongebob, on repeat.

for all others, the whole movie is sprinkled and seeded with clues and symbols. the name of the lipstick is red rum, the mountain lion in the room, etc etc. the whole movie is a surreal trip. it would be a waste to just assess this film by just how "gorg" the actresses are, or how "omg, so hot" the dresses are.

srsly.

reply

I've never seen Spongebob in my life. I also know when the emperor has no clothes and I know this movie doesn't have a 1/3 of the references you think it has.

reply

[deleted]

really. can you list them?
i counted 14 references to other auteurs' work, famous mise-en-scene techniques, genres of occult, soundbytes etc. by your calculations, there shouldn't even be 4.

so while we are on moralistic fables, the pot really shouldn't be calling the kettle black. especially when the pot doesn't even realise it's really a shallow frying pan. :)

if you have nothing to contribute, please leave the thread and let people who want to, discuss.

The Cake Eating Clown is this boards(And MANY others) Troll. It's quite irritating when you cant discuss a film without the irritating nonsense. I love the similarity of the Bathroom Scene with 'The Shining'... Not quite as powerful but still very disturbing.

reply

Some fans of the movie take the criticism of it a bit personally, so they try to find deeper meaning and symbolism than is there.

reply

Swastikas go the other direction.

reply

Swastikas are not necessarily nazi. they are hindeo-buddhist actually.

reply

Exactly lol.

reply

do you even know what a swastika is, beyond Hitler....? haha.

reply

I do actually.

reply

fantastic. kindly elucidate, i graduated with a major in asian art history, and work in museums where i deal with swastikas and other artefacts from 300 bc. so i would love to hear what you have to add! :)

go on, prove me wrong. haha

reply

I don't have to prove anything to you.-

reply

sweetie, i think there is a typo in your last message...

"I dont have anything to prove my case to you"

fixed it! :D hahaha

reply

Sweetie, you come off as pitifully narcissistic, just like the characters in this movie.

I simply am not there...

reply

i'm really sorry that i met that troll head-on with my own trolling. i thought that was fair-play. but in my defense, i am educated and come with a lot of sass. no apologies needed, sheeple.

Some do, but the image in the movie goes in the same direction as the Nazi swastika.

reply

Swastikas go the other direction.

They went both ways in the movie, you can clearly see em reflected on the big sunglasses. So what does that mean?

reply

Exactly! In the glasses they are reflected the "nazi way". I don't think the use of it was totally unintentional.

reply

i didn't reach that part, the crap is so boring, but the movie is full of illuminati stuff, the director is a kubrick wannabe, but failed miserably

reply

Agreed. Drive was equally as painful to watch, and trying to be something it was not.

I think the movie is referreing to itself in the last scene.
It´s all about beauty. Natural beauty vs artificial bauty. The movies symbolisms are those of Vanitas. Read up about it. Beauty and death goes all along together.
The death of Jesse just after she talks about how she is pinaccle of evolution of beauty and everyone just wants to be like her but will never reach her while standing above Ruby is like saying that she is of aryan race and everyone else is inferior. Maybe thats why she is blonde with blue eyes.
The swastikas refer to that and then Gigi, the most artificial girl, in the movie is puking out her eyeball. This refers to art, to the movie itself. Puking out an eyeball is a metaphor for the unconsumable art. The movie itself is not very easy to consume and therefore it is art. Art is mostly consumed by the eyes.
Sarah in this is able to consume everything. She can adept to anything, evolutionary speaking and is the most dangerous not Jesse. Think of Albert Speer. Probably he wasnt even a Nazi but a genius in adepting to given circumstances in society. He built Konzentration Camps and probably invented industrialized killing but was the only one who didnt get death penalty. So in the last scene the whole movie comes together. Beauty on the other hand is the currency in this movie but is exchangeable. Isnt humankind literally eating each other up for money? And who are those who can adept the most to our turbo capitalistic society?
Genius film.

Thank you for your reply.

I like the connection you made between the perfect beauty and the ideal master race. It was not a coincidence Jesse is blonde and blue eyed, even beyond Aryan standards, that is still the Hollywood standard or template.

I do think it is a hard movie to grasp for most, especially those who are not tuned to the techniques of the filmic arts (symbolisms, visual tropes, mise en scene). It is just lazy to say or assume anything, because as far as good directors go, everything they put into a film is a choice. Some parts remind me so much of Bergman's Persona, due to the surrealistic aspects, but also because both films start out with the unwavering perspective of one female character, and by the end, both perspective and character is just cancelled out.

the pretty packaging of The Neon Demon also does it a bit of disservice, as i am sure there are some who watched it just for the pretty lights, the pretty dresses, the pretty faces. and for them, that is all there is to it. :(

reply

Oh, if only we could all be as deep as you. You are just like this movie, trying to pretend you are something you clearly are not.

reply

For someone who hates this film, you are very invested in it! Revisiting this thread multiple times over many months, to put me and others down, for wanting to discuss a filmic work on a site that is created for that very purpose. Truly mind-boggling! :D

Janis would be uber disappointed in your life choices, sheeple.

reply

That was a great analysis of a great film. I have to admit I pride myself on my own analysis of this film and what I got from it... but the swastikas stumped me big time. It makes perfect sense, the Aryan idea of beauty and perfection. Jesse really did have that... and that's what Gigi and Sarah wanted. So of course they end up in a room with swastika patterns on the wallpaper eating up regurgitated pieces of Jesse.

reply

I really like these thoughts. Thank you for sharing!

reply

I thought they resembled swastikas too, so don't let the haters get you down.

reply

Talking about symbolism is fine, as long as you don't come off as a pretentious pompous ass, and put others down in the process.
