Danish language...

...almost as bad as French (or English). The words have so many extra letters that aren't even pronounced. I already watched all 3 seasons of Rita (and 4 episodes of Hjørdis) with English subtitles. Now started over with Danish subtitles. I swear the text barely matches what comes out of their mouths.

Check out http://www.speakdanish.dk/en/lessons/0010-1------first-meeting.php:
også is pronounced os
spændende is pronounced spin
Huh?

Just as with the English language, native speakers of Danish become lazy when speaking their own language. When words are abbreviated it's the context that let's you know the meaning. Eg. "Også" which kan also be written "osse" in it's lazy form is pronounced "os" which actually means "us".

I have no idea how you figured that "spændende" is pronounced "spin". Æ sounds more like the initial E in "every" and the "ende" part is pronounced although you can't really hear the D. Learning a new language is tricky :)

That still doesn't make it "spin" /'sp?n/ as opposed to spændende [?sb?n?n?] :)

Bummer - too many weird symbols/letters in the phonetic alphabet.....

Ignore what's written. Click the arrow to hear it spoken.

I just need to open my mouth to hear it pronounced. ;-) Not everyone has an ear for foreign languages and that's fine. If it were pronounced the same way, the phonetic spelling would be the same.

I'm a dane, and 'spændende' is not pronounced 'spin' - I've atleast never heard it before :)

Danish language is horrible; it's about as romantic as German, and with all the different accents, half of Denmark doesn't understand eachother :D was born in Norway, and Norwegian is much more beautiful than Danish.
