i think the film makes a rather convincing argument about capital punishment, not just as a means of administering punishment to deter violent, criminal behavior, but as an act of old testament retribution. it also acknowledges that it does have an effect on us, especially for those who are more intimately involved in the process. besides, there is very little evidence to support the claim that capital punishment does anything to deter the actions of lifelong, violent criminals. criminal justice and incarceration does more to permeate violent behavior than anything else. some see it as the only real viable solution, especially in a country that incarcerates more people per capita, but it's a short-term solution, and one that advances a systemic problem it presumes to remedy.
