The people giving him crap never had any rational basis to do so and they've largely subsided.
If you ever read a single interview with him, you'd see he was like a really great guy.
He's incredibly thoughtful, up front, and open. He doesn't bash any of his directors and didn't when he was going through that bad streak.
I heard him speak and it was really inspirational.
He also has a really soft spot in his heart for disabled kids and he befriended a random kid named Joe Kidregan (spelling is probably off) who graduated Falls Church High SChool in 2007 and he spoke at his graduation and was so humble. I'm not saying that befriending one random kid is as good as being a generally good guy to all the kids or all the people you meet, but there's little precedent to think otherwise.
Anyways, in 2002 he was filming a movie, and some disabled kid in a wheelchair was there watching among the crowds. He befriended him and his family and he regularly visits him when he's in town and has helped him with his causes. .
He said "I didn't have the privilage of graduating Falls Church High School unlike you all" and it was just a random public high school as if there was anything special about it. But he made everyone in our whole community right then and there feel kind of special about it and totally made all of those high schoolers graduation special. He hugged the principal too.
I know I'm kind of gushing about it.
