Make rubbish film, call it a 'homage' (some spoilers)

This is basically a mostly awful film lurking behind a "homage" status. House of the Devil is a homage in a very similar kind of vein and style, but is superb. I appreciate that slasher films in the 80s weren't renowned for performance or script, but when you look at Black Christmas (which is more or less what this film is trying to rip) it's like an oscar winner compared to this. To be fair, the effects in Sleeper are actually not too bad on the whole and fit nicely with the whole visual style, the acting is a bit horrible in places but never quite bad enough to be worse than the films it is trying to emulate. The real problem is just the script. Towards the end it all just tails off like someone just totally lost interest. What exactly happens to the cop? He's running around, discovers the girl is next and then all of a sudden he seems to have just fallen down a black hole. So what's the point of him? And also, I can suspend some disbelief as much as anyone, but why exactly does he tell the girl to "go and find a payphone" when there's not only could we "surmise" perfectly fully functioning phone in the house, but it's a pivotal plot device that actually has probably MORE screen time than the cop himself! Durrr!? And what's with the sleeper? Again, no need to really go into massive amounts of detail, but would be nice to have a little guess at why he's doing what he's doing. Anyhow, I actually enjoyed this film for what it was, but don't expect an amazing homage in so much as a mostly rubbish attempt at a horror film.

yep , that's one of the lame excuses given by the makers and lovers of plain terrible movies, another big one being "lol! you don't get it! It's supposed to be bad!" well in this case mission fully accomplished.

reply

Yea it was pretty bad. The thing i hated the most is, unless i missed it, i had no idea who the killer was or why he was killing..

reply

I guess you hate Black Christmas as well.

Moron.

reply

lol im a moron because i didnt like it because i didnt know who the guy was? btw i liked Black Christmas(original)

reply

You never find out much about the "guy" in Black Christmas either. This happens in a lot of horror movies including Slumber Party Massacre. I think it was part of the hoamge. I really enjoyed it.

Of course house of the devil is a better film, but that film was made for over 300 k, maybe over 500k, and they had an entire crew, where as the sleeper was made for just 30k and with basically one man working all jobs. I agree the word homage is being used to death these days to
Either cover up weak points or a lack of imagination, but the sleeper is what it is and should be appreciated for trying to bring back a sun genre horror fans love, and who *beep* cares about motive , motives are done to death every night on csi law and order criminal mind reruns

Did I even watch the same movie as some of you guys? I thought they did excellent. I thought it had the perfect amount of humor, gore and everything. It was a great throwback in my opinion.

reply

I just saw house of the devil. It had zero plot. The sleeper was way better.

reply

I agree, Grimey. House of the Devil sucked hard. This was definitely better, despite it's flaws and obvious copying of Black Christmas.

I guess you decided to take a piss or catch a few ZZZs (wink wink) when the cop comes into the sorority house, gets Amy (the "next girl") to come out of the bathroom that she's hiding in, tells her to go to the police station, and then gets killed by The Sleeper as Amy is about to leave...
Next time, try to pay more attention before posting stupid *beep* on imdb ;)

It's a horror movie set in 1981, as if made at that time. It was perfect.

You just didn't get it. You can't separate style from content. You see a lack of content as a bad movie, however it was in perfect keeping with the style of that period.

Content for you meaning spoon feeding of every little detail about everyone and everything with a complete explanation of everyone's motivations and full backstories with a prequel just to hold your hand even more.

As I said you just don't get it.

Alright, I totally concede! It wasn't an opinion at all! What can I say. It was far too intellectual I just felt stupid, and I wasn't paying attention and I took a massive piss at one point, and to top it off I fell asleep. There's just no fooling you people.

oh we get it....get that it was dreadful
