I know that most cartoons and such are animated in Korea, but are there any other touching films such as this that someone could recommend?
I also can't believe this didn't win any awards! It had just amazing animation, an original story, and will make even the most macho of men cry, although I know most Korean films have sad endings...

You mean animated or live action?
If you really want to cry (in a good, touching, haunting way) like in Leafie, I can wholeheartedly recommend Fly Away Home (1996). Also with waterfowl (geese), this movie is extremely touching and haunting and touches your very soul. Highly recommended and also underrated, just like Leafie!
As for animation, by all means watch The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, also with geese. If you live in the US, there wasn't made an english version. But throughout Europe and Japan, it's very popular and well-known classic. Every child in Europe and Japan knows that animated series (also movie). The last four episodes will touch and haunt you, similar to the endings of Leafie and Fly Away Home. I've never seen a closing of a series that leaves you crying on your couch like that. You need a whole package of Kleenex for both recommended movies/series. :)

This post is quite old, but this movie reminded me a bit of One Stormy Night (the movie version not the awful series.) It also reminded me a little of Ringing Bell.
The movies aren't that similar, but they do have a similar sort of feeling and similar themes. One Stormy Night is about a goat and a wolf who become friends and have to overcome their natures and escape from their families to live together. Ringing Bell is a movie about a sheep who was raised by a wolf so he could get revenge on the wolf for killing his mom.
You should check them out if you have the chance.
