Ruth Brown

Just finished listening the dual between Ruth and Deniece for the n-th time. I mean, Deniece has a very impressive voice but she is too staged in all aspects: movement, outfit, vocals.
Ruth Brown, on the other hand.. Wow! If this girl doesn't become a superstar, I don't know who will. I thought her blind audition was impressive but her dual surprised me even more. I didn't know she could hit those high notes. Her style does reveal her young age (some of her vocal choices aren't always perfect) but all in all, what a voice!

I agree with you on Deniece - she was too staged and a bit too 'Jackson' for me.

Ruth also has a great voice but I felt she screwed up the duet in a way. She was so fast and the contrast with Deniece's lines just made it... Not flow for me. I feel she should have slowed down. And toward the end she lost it and was all over the place.

I know that won't be a popular opinion but, hey whatever. It's mine.

I totally agree. By the end of the battle, it was just screaming over each other. However, both women proved at some point during the song that they have incredible voices. For me, it comes down to this question: "Who would benefit more from this experience right now?" And there's no question it's Ruth. Can Deniece really be taught anything more or given any more advice? Maybe a bit here and there, but I think Ruth was the right choice for Tom to take into the live shows.

I agree. I too thought Ruth was rushing the song. Although I think it's her style, attacking a note before ahead of the music. And she was pitchy in some parts of the song.

Not a popular opinion but I felt Deniece won that battle. Ruth has a great voice but no technique and no control. She was pitchy and all over the song. She should get lessons before she gets a record deal, she does need them. Just think how much better she will be if she can truly control that wonderful voice.

She isn't ready yet to be a star. Look how Danny decided on Bo over Vince: Bo is ready right now to be a star and sell plenty of records. Ruth needs more time and technique.

It was the sob story about Ruth's father that won Tom over.

OT
Personally I find all those sob stories incredibly annoying. Grief is a personal thing, so are psychological problems. Using them publicly to get ahead over other contestants really puts me off.

Losing a parent is terrible, using it to garner voters' sympathy is despicable.

Same goes for Toni Warne and her baldness. Buy yourself a wig lady if it really bothers you that much! Now Toni practises with a head scarf but battles in public bald. No sympathy votes from me.

It really should all be about the voice, nothing else. When people use personal problems for sympathy votes it has the opposite effect on me. I am only human and despite my best intentions I won't vote for somebody I truly do not like.

If it can flash the loo it's welcome but as the embodiment of heavenly grace I won't pick up poo

I agree that Ruth has little control but a great producer and a great vocal coach could help her do some clean recordings for an album. But she needs a lot of work and record companies don't like investing in long-term projects, they want money right now.
As for Deniece, I agree she was vocally much better but there are some elements about her that tick me off too much and would hinder me from choosing her. Some of her runs were too self-indulgent, everything about her movement was fake (too Janet Jackson, and being compared to that talentless hack is quite serious), her smile seems fake, and her brother gives me the creeps. Plus, she is quite old so it would be more difficult for her to win the show than it would for Ruth. And that's all that counts after all.

I couldn't agree with you more. I skip forward those parts. I don't care about people's problems. If I'm paying big bucks for your album, it's for your voice, not your family status.

Well said. I mean "I'm doing this for my daughter"!?!?! I mean, what the hell? So what, if I don't have kids, I don't deserve to win or does it mean I want it less?

No sympathy votes from me.

I'm liking you more and more. The problem is, people are far too emotional. There are unable to separate emotions from logic.

I'm not a fan of either girl and their 'battle' was overkill in the warbling stakes.
Ruth belts and embellishes her notes too forcefully and Deniece copies MJ too much.

Jenny who lost out to Joelle has far more control in her voice over both of the above.

George Lucas talking about: 'Hey, give it to me, I'll fix it. I'll make 20 more of them'

Very much true but there's a big difference between the two: Deniece can carry a tune. Actually, her control was quite impressive. Some of her runs were artistically just blah but overall, quite impressive.
