Tough to watch, but funny, touching, and inspiring.

This is an amazing story. It was the life story of the director's family. Her daughter plays her mother (the older daughter, "Amelia") in the film. The director's husband makes a cameo as the guy with the van. It speaks to the love parents have for their children and for the sacrifices made for them.

The director's daughter plays her (the director) as a child. The mother is played by Zoe Saldana.

Which is what I meant. What I wrote was sloppy and confusing. Thanks for the clarification.

Yeah, this was hurting my brain haha.

What tough to watch is all the constant smoking around the children as well as all the cursing/bad language/bad gesture by the father to his children. The acting is sublime and riveting; the chemistry between the four of them are obvious and such a delight to watch.

I think it was a fine performance by Mark Ruffalo – as all of them are – but, like his character here, the film felt a bit "off" because it's more comedic than it needs to be. 7/10 stars from me.

I didn't think it was tough to watch, if anything I felt that they sugarcoated it a bit much. Still okay but it felt like they could have made a more serious and realistic movie.

Without going into it... I grew up in a house that had "issues". As a family, it still holds true. The film handled it well.

I did too. I'm not saying that it's on Hallmark level of cheesiness I just think they played it more for the comedy than needed at times.
