I am not sure why she had to keep that the mall was closing a secret. It seems to me that if she said something they would try and work hard to not have it close.
From a corporate standpoint you keep the shutdown secret to keep employees motivated. Once you let them know a business is closing down, employees work less or quit. Also, it became apparent that the mall was never going to survive even if they finished #1 in sales. So, there was no saving the mall. So, my first point becomes even more valid.
