(other than maybe Leslie Mann's pregnancy announcement)

I can't get this one out of my mind because it was so effing bizarre:
When he is at the autograph convention the guy gets out a camera and says something like, "say your show's catchphrase! SAY IT!"
Deniro said something like, "CHARLIE'S HOME, AND I'LL KILL EVERY LAST ONE OF YA! I'LL KILL YOU, ME AND OUR BRATTY LITTLE KIDS!"
Even my packed theater of mostly old people, which was laughing at any moderately good joke, went dead silent on that one. There was a palpable "WTF?!?!?" mood amongst them. Then they cut away from that scene.
I thought, "I guess that they're going to use this somehow-- maybe it will be one of his outrageous viral moments or something."
Nope. It was supposed to be a standalone joke... and it was absolutely miserable.



It was a very vulgar and ugly scene. The plot already established him as a vulgar, violent and hateful man, but it could have at least edited that part out. Bellowing out that your are going to kill your wife and fairy son will shock and turn heads, but I certainly doubt anyone would seek that person's autograph. I think his character was resentful of being remembered for that stupid sitcom when he really wanted to be known as a comedian. I guess.

Precisely. No one can cheer on the dude because he is pretty hideous.

So when he makes value judgements about Leslie Mann's father it's cringe-worthy. You almost want to say, "he seems like a prick, but he might actually be a better guy than you."



Yeah the only time you felt he had the moral high ground in a scene is when he quit the gameshow.

This is indicative of how far the writers of this abominable movie were off the mark. It really hit me before this scene, when the brief clip of the TV show that make him famous was shown. It was supposed to be modeled on shows that mine humor from family dysfunction, that have been quite popular since Married With Children. But the clip is so mean-spirited and devoid of humor, along the lines of the autograph convention scene, that it's completely implausible that people would have fond memories of it. Jeffrey Ross knows what funny is. He has shown it in his own comedy. How could he have written this mean-spirited, humorless junk?

Yeah the whole reason I paid to see this was because Jeff Ross was behind it. Jeff Ross is a comedian who consistently makes me laugh, and has done so for over a decade on numerous platforms whether it be stand up, roasts, talk shows, podcasts, or anything else. I genuinely love Jeff Ross's comedy. When I heard there was a movie about an insult comic written by Jeff Ross, that was a movie I was going to see. Yet this movie was extremely unfunny. DeNiro's character was so unlikable that the only way to save the movie was it for it to be hilarious, but it just wasn't. The "3 scenes that went viral," none were funny. Really a guy singing poopy at an old folk's home is supposed to be the big laugh scene of the movie? The only likable scene with DeNiro is when he quit the game show, but that scene wasn't funny.

Him being so unlikable also hurt the movie in so many ways, because you thought "well that character is bad, but he is worse." Nothing really in the movie worked. Probably the worst movie I have seen in the theater in many years.
