Did Hank tip off the cops purposely? (spoilers)

First off I really LOVED this film. It was beautifully shot and well acted. After seeing it the first time I din't think that Hank tipped off the cops purposely but, after watching it again I'm not too sure. At first I just thought he just wanted to say good bye to his room, as a young kid might. After seeing it again, I got the impression that he was expecting something to be there and had an anxious look when he saw the table. This could imply a stalling tactic, perhaps?

It's reasonable to believe his wanting to stay had to do with emotions/hormones after kissing his first girlfriend. Others had mentioned that the disabled boy's mom called the police and that makes more sense. Perhaps the director intended to make the reason the cops came at the end ambiguous on purpose.

Any thoughts?

Well according to the book, Hank's little girlfriend tipped off the cops to get the reward money. But it was Hank who confirmed it was the prisoner they were running away with. He regretted it later but he was conflicted with leaving and wanting his mom being happy.

I thought that how the police knew Frank was there was deliberately left open. It could have been one of three things: Was it the nosy neighbor who called the police? Did the cynical little new girl in town notify them, as someone suggests, for the reward money? Or did the policeman who brought Henry home follow up on his suspicions?

It seemed inevitable that he would be caught; how it was done is left to the viewer.

Yea, I think the neighbor gave the police a heads up and gave them the casserole pan with Frank's fingerprints on it because she was suspicious.
