The family might've have motives to "believe" him, but I can't believe the FBI was so dumb. But to the defense of the detective, the ears dnt' change with aging. So I guess stress, violence, plastic surgery, and age can change your facial features, but the ears don't change. And even if you get plastic surgery, the shape will still be the same.

shareInterestingly, the ears were used by some investigators to prove that the imposter Anna Anderson was conclusively the Russian Grand Duchess Anastasia. The ears of both from photos matched on all key points. Supposedly, ears are as unique as fingerprints.
Nevertheless, DNA testing proved otherwise.
