Do people hate this movie because....

It doesnt glorify america in the world war? or is this movie just bad?
Because im tired of low ratings on movies that arnt pro american! Especially when the movie is good.
Like america is the only country that should be glorified...

reply

No - the movie is seriously flawed from most aspects: weak unrelatable characters, paper thin senseless plot, unneeded CGI effects.

reply

Ok ;) Just tired of movies that get bashed just because people doesnt agree in the way movies like this are told XD

reply

This movie just sucks, America has nothing to do with this film.

this was a terrible movie - ludicrous romantic sub plot; ridiculous hand to hand combat scenes; unbelievable killing of a Colonel and more and more. Enemy at the Gates was a superior movie.

reply

SYAVA, I disagree. This movie certainly doesn't suck, and I think your perception of it's level of suckatude has EVERYTHING to do with the probability that you ARE an American, along with the majority of the rest of the haters on this board.

Stefa_flame, please watch it if you already haven't.

I think it's possible that the recent events driven by Putin have greatly influenced people's opinions. Let's give a nod to a bit of Cold War hangover while we're at it. "The only good Red is a dead Red." Putin is not the people, anymore than the people running our country are representative of most of us. Of course I could be wrong and you are incandescently happy with the way things are going for you here in the States right now.

Don't get me wrong. People are literally dying to live here. It IS pretty sweet compared to a ton of other countries, but it ain't all roses, and if you think it is, then God bless.

reply

And I'm not trying to pick on you but...when you say America has nothing to do with this movie, you do realize that both Paramount and Walt Disney Studios were heavily involved in it's production, right? As was Sony.

reply

[deleted]

Of course it is because average westerner can stand the fact that they own they freedom to Russian heroism. That, and nothing else. Movie is superb.

reply

I don't think USA owes their freedom to Russian heroism. It was hitlar opening up a war on 2 fronts that ended it for himself and his country. I'm not minimizing the Russian heroism that did take place. Russian soldiers should be remembered and honored for the fight they put up. But don't say that the west owes Russia for their freedom...that's an insanely ignorant statement.

reply

Well it's true, that 4 out of 5 German soldiers killed in the war were killed in the Eastern Front by the Red Army. That is 80%.

It's also true, that 4 out of 5 German civilians killed in the war were killed by the USAAF and the RAF. That is 80%.

I'm not glorifying the Red Army, just pointing out that there were no nice sides in the war.

reply

And without US production Europe would be speaking German today. Heroism is good, but without raw materials, weapons, aircraft, tanks and ammo it's completely useless.

Google Lend Lease. Google US production in WW2. It's frightening what the Yanks pumped out. They built the merchant ships, which were vital for Europe and the war in the Pacific, faster than the Germans and Japanese could sink them. Not even going into warships like carriers (over 140 built) or aircraft numbers (and designs.) It's just frightening.

Also, your number of losses of the Germans is completely wrong. 80% on the Eastern Front? Try around 50%, that's closer. 2/3 is the highest estimate, and that includes the deaths of POWs and not just combat operation.

And let's not forget one important thing. The Soviet "freedom" was no freedom for many of the "liberated" countries, but rather just a transfer from one fascist system to another fascist system, from one bloodthirsty tyranny to another bloodthirsty tyranny.

reply

Don't make me laugh with freedom. It is surely not with Soviet communism that brought freedom to the world. My country became communist and allied with Soviet Russia and I can tell you there was no freedom at all. Total BS. Luckily for my family and I, we were able to sneaked out of the country and made a new life in the West.

reply

You do realize you would be speaking German if FDR hadnt been sending weapons to the USSR right?

reply

[deleted]

Like the peoples of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romaina, and Bulgaria owed their freedom to the Soviet Union 1945 - c. 1990?

reply

The movie isn't bad, but it is almost as annoyingly pro-Soviet as those Hollywood movies that are pro-America.

reply

Thats the problem... pro sovjet things arnt allowed when pro amercan things are.

reply

Who says it's not allowed? Hollywood is much kinder to Soviet communism than fascist Nazism. This pro thing is just annoying on both sides, although I prefer America's side. With capitalism, I get to at least criticize and say whatever I want. There is a certain level of freedom whist communism is *beep* all around.

reply

This movie sucks, end of discussion. It isn't a good depiction of the battle, the characters are paper thin, it's all spectacle over substance. The spectacle isn't even impressive. It's a rehash of old hollywood war movie cliches.

reply

Try watching the German made film called "Stalingrad". Much better than the 2013 version.

reply

As i stated. I dont give a jack *beep* about politics. See movies as a movie, not what its symbolising

reply

There's no point in asking. Just see it for yourself. When someone has an axe to grind, they will often attack a movie on artistic grounds to disguise their political or other bias. And American critics will routinely trash Russian movies since they work for media corporations that are all tied into the military-industrial-complex in one way or another. So there's no way to know without seeing it. I am enjoying it very much though it is a bit cheesy.

Leave the gun, take the cannoli...

I'm Russian, this movie is garbage, it isn't just Americans bashing it. Most Russians my age consider this movie garbage as well, along with most of Bondarchuk's work. It isn't good.

I didn't hate the movie. I liked the actual story of the man with many fathers. It could have been any nationality.

What I found humorous was the scene where the Soviet soldiers who were on fire - were able to continue fighting and killing Germans. It was a little ridiculous bit of propaganda.

But I also had to keep reminding myself that in WWII the Germans were the bad guys.

I didn't understand why it was only available in 3D. At least in the theatre I went to.

reply

I am a fan of good war films, but this was pretty bad because it was so over the top, from the moment the wave of Russians who were completely on fire kept charging and fighting I knew the film was doomed. Money was thrown at the makers on the condition they make every Russian a full on hero capable of killing a dozen Germans before breakfast. The characters lose all humanity, and therefore sympathy from the viewer, that is why it is bad, nothing to do with nationality or politics.

reply

I'm not American, I watch a lot of war movies from many countires, but I've found that the majority of recent Russian WW2-themed movies are more or less poor. There are exceptions, of course, but in general the plots are too weak.

reply

The only difference is that American movies are good. This was a CGI gay-fest. This movie is beyond corny.

The only thing missing was dubstep music to the crappy slow motion scenes.

reply

Honestly? I thought this movie was great. What I've gathered from these boards is people are still mad about WWII for some reason.

Whether it's an American film or a "foreign" film I take everything the same way. What kind of movie is it? Did I like the trailer?

From the trailer this basically appeared to be Russian Saving Private Ryan with a bit of 300 flair thrown in. I went in expecting that and that's what I got and I thought it was awesome as I believe was the intent when they made it. If people thought they were going to go in and get a serious WW docudrama then that would be THEIR mistake since there is nothing about any advertising I've seen for this movie that would suggest that it was.

The cinematography in this is amazing. The characters are interesting enough that I can easily distinguish between them based on their personality types. And I thought the story was pretty good for what it was.

I can't knock it for being exactly what it wanted to be and being that well. Most of the hate I've seen for this movie appears to be WW bitterness. Which is somewhat amusing to me, but mostly just sad. I recognize that it does have the familiar tone of propaganda, but America pumps out movies like this every week so I can't knock the Russians for doing it. Though it was interesting to be on the outside looking in for once when it comes to that.

Crying children will dry their eyes. Sleeping babies will awaken and take to the skies!

the movie isn't very good, has a lot of minor flaws that add up and make it a little annoying.

the real problem for an English speaker is that it is in Russian and German with RUSSIAN voiceover and English subtitles, so it is VERY confusing to watch which kills the movie.

A Russian friend of mine said the Russian voiceover gets so jammed up with the character dialoge being that they are very nearly the same volume that even he finds it confusing / annoying to watch.

Technically the movie is poor. It's got some great production design and a couple of cool SFX sequences, but that's it.

reply

It's bad.

It's a good example in a bad way how it doesn't matter how much money and effects you put into a film if the writing is trash.

!

reply

To me, it wasn't all bad. Kretschmann in particular is always good. But the film got so bogged down on the two love stories for so long.

reply

Im not american and i had a hard time trying to watch this movie. Too many bs.
