Loosely based on Pavlov's House

Sgt. Yakob Pavlov and around 25 or so men of the 13th Guards Rifle Division re-captured and held an apartment building overlooking a key section on the bank of the Volga River. They fought off countless German attacks from September 27th until they were relieved on November 25th 1942. By then The German Sixth Army was surrounded by two Soviet Fronts and the Battle of Stalingrad turned against the Germans.

Reading about it makes one wonder, why didn't they make a film about Pavlov's House instead of some corny love story? General Vasily Chuikov of the 62nd Army, who wrote the book on street fighting and urban warfare would boast that more Germans died trying to take Pavlov's House than they did in France.

If anyone wants to check out good reading on Pavlov's House, check out Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad by William Craig, nothing like the grossly inaccurate film that took its name. Antony Beevor's Stalingrad: The Fateful Siege remains to be the best English language account. David Glantz monsterous 4 volume set on Stalingrad is also a must have.
