colored people

I was about 5 years old when my family was going to visit my Grandmother at her new home. I was sitting in the back with my brother when I heard my parents say the words "colored people". I got so excited I was looking around anxiously waiting to see a colored person. After a few minutes I was really getting worked up over not knowing where these illusive beings were. I finally yelled "where, where are they"? My Mother pointed at a group of people. I'll never forget how utterly disappointed I was, they were just people, plain old everyday people in my eyes. I thought for sure I was going to see people in blue, green, red, purple, yellow, and orange. To this day I still see people as people, we're all the same under our skin.

Did this happen in the 50's?

reply

Yes, I was born in 52.

reply

I thought so.

Colored was the norm in 57, before civil rights. Negro was still used but less accepted. Black was used for the rest of the century.
