Annette is not right for Nightwish!

I'm tired of all these people saying stuff like "Tarja and Annette are two different people and you can't compare them" and "real fans would accept Nightwish whatever singer they have."

No, Tarja belongs in Nightwish. Annette's voice isn't anything special, there's nothing that makes her stand out. Tarja on the other hand, really has such a distinct voice and can reach heights no one else could. I don't know how people can like Annette. Tarja is desperately needed back in the band. It's not Nightwish without Tarja.

I'm a huge Nightwish fan and i was really sad when Tarja was fired. But i was pleasently surprised when i first heard Dark Passion Play with Annette. Sure, they doesnt sound the same, but its still good. In my opinion, its always gonna be Nightwish as long as Tuomas is in the band. I sure would like Tarja to come back, but i doubt Tuomas will ever let her back

I wholeheartedly disagree with you. I'm in the "real fans accept Nightwish for whatever singer they have" category. It's all about the genius melodic metal from Tuomas that makes the magic happen. The singers are just bonus onto the amazing music. The switch from Tarja to Annette was a good thing --- it has given the amazing musical talent of the band a chance to play and record with different singing styles. Some day, hopefully long from now, when Nightwish is happily retired and they have like 10 more albums (I hope!), people will be able to look at the amazing discography and hear a wide variety of music, some with opera style vocals and some with more pop style vocals.

That being said, I never had a chance to meet Tarja. But I met Annette and Tuomas after their NYC concert in Times Square in 2008, and they were all SO nice. Like not a single bone of fakeness in them. I've met celebrities before and they're usually kind of like, "I know I'm better, richer, and more awesome than you, and I'm just pretending to lower myself to your level," but not Nightwish, not at all. If anything they were so humble and literally thanking all the fans that they met, like over and over again, saying how we make them happen and stuff, etc. It was an amazing experience and still the best concert I've ever been to. Annette was so nice!

Agreed completely.

The problem is that Anette is a pop singer.

Tarja might belong in Nightwish, but Nightwish doesn't belong with Tarja. Have you heard Tarja's solo work? It doesn't even compare to her Nightwish work. A lot of it just feels soulless, and without Tuomas's guidance, it seems like she often doesn't even know how to properly utilize her own voice. She's a fantastic singer, but Nightwish doesn't need her to be amazing.

Anette is a great singer for the band's evolution. I can understand people who made some early assumptions based off Dark Passion Play, since all the music was written before Anette was even chosen. But now that Imaginaerum is out, it only further proves that Tuomas knows exactly what he's doing. Not to mention, there is no way Tarja has the range to do a song like Scaretale properly.

Both singers are great in Nightwish, but complaining about the change is really one of the dumbest things I come across. Tarja has been gone for over 6 years. She made a lot of fantastic music when she was with the band, and I never get tired of listening to those albums--it's not like they disappear either. But I'm perfectly happy with their current sound, and I completely trust Tuomas's talent, and have yet to be disappointed with his decisions.

So yes, true Nightwish fans are aware that a composer is much more important than a lead singer, and their ears wouldn't deceive them by placing such value on the singer alone.

Tarja certainly added an element of originality in the genre. Anyone, that says she didn't and/or denies her impact on the identity of Nightwish (at the time) is either insane or asinine. I don't know of any other metal bands with an opera singer as talented as Tarja. That said, Nightwish is much more than the vocalist. This is evidenced in the music. I never feel like I am listening to the same song over and over again. Each song has its signature and belongs within the context of its respective album.

Now, there are a few songs on "Dark Passion Play" where one can certainly sense the transition was still in progress, but I have heard "Imaginaerum" and those kinks seemed to have worked themselves out. The album is freaking awesome! So, Tarja is surely missed, but Anette has certainly proven herself.

Completely agree! I don't get this "evolution", band should have an identity. It's like replacing James Hetfield in Metallica with Justin Timberlake and say "Justin is a great singer" ...

I don't want to sound like an old boring rocker, because i am, and this may sound off the subject a little, but I experienced the same transition with Genesis when Peter Gabriel left. Like Tarja now, he forged his own identity and sound, and although the Genesis sound slowly changed, the songwriting from the key members Banks /Rutherford kept it going to bigger and argueably better things. And I love the new sound that Tarja has with her band, just as much as the new Nightwish sound. The same will be with Nightwish as long as Tuomas is the key element. In such music, different doesn't always mean better or worse than the previous lead singer, just different. In just two albums Nightwish has found a new exciting and innovative direction which will lead them to even better things. All those so called diehard fans should be pleased that Nightwish didn't simply disband after Tarja left, now that would be a tragedy.I experienced that sadness as Elis slowly pass away after Sabine died. Now If similar Genesis fans had given the last lineup with Ray Wilson a real chance then who knows what Banks and Rutherford could have done with a second album. But in that case the fan support wasn't there and that was the end of that. At least Banks has continued to pursue the classical side of his music and is releasing another wonderful piece for orchestra this week. Be thankful that Tuomas knows what he is doing with his dream called Nightwish.

As an old-young man of 34, I also have often made that same Nightwish connection to Genesis.

I like Tarja and Anette in a different but equal way. I also like Peter and Phil in a different but equal way.
There seems to be a minority that like both and that goes for each pair. Somewhat polarized certainly.

Phil is a great drummer and overall a good musician. Peter is a superior songwriter and perhaps a better musician as well, but they are very different characters.
Phil obviously was not the focal writing force in the band but when Peter left, and particularly when Steve Hackett left, the band evolved more pop sensibilities due to Collins.

Nightwish also never relied on who was fronting them as their major writing contributor. It has always been mainly Tuomas like you said. That is the major reason for the continued success of both bands after losing key members. Most bands, even big ones do end up failing after losing their "face."
Also, from what is known about Floor Jansen's first weeks with Nightwish, she is turning out to be a few levels above Ray Wilson for sure. They may be poised to carry on quite well yet again.
