product placement

apple.I mean seriously? that scene where annie drops the ipad from the window and jay picks it up and says : "wow, the construction of these things is unbelievable" :D could they do it more obvious way?! :D I get it that they need money from product placement but that's just too much i think.

Or when he's watching the video an says something to the effect of, "wow the detail in that camera is freakin' amazing".

Yes it was really too much in your face & I was totally turned off after hearing this line.

The movie was anyway bad, and to top it having to suffer though these ads made it even more excruciating!

The product placement for PornHub was way more bizarre. They name-dropped them constantly, even going as far as showing the website several times and having a fictionalized version of the owner (Jack Black) show up as a friendly, sensei who saves their marriage with a lame speech.

reply

For them constantly name-dropping a porn site, you would think that you would remember that it was YouPorn not Pornhub

reply

Doesn't matter, they are owned by the same company anyway.

On the other hand, that was one small thing that helped me connect with the film, as you wouldn't believe the number of times I've dropped my iPods (as well as my kindle, etc.) without them being noticeably damaged in any way. I often think, "Crap, I'm sure that did it in this time," only to be surprised that the device is just fine after my latest bout of clumsiness.

apple products are used in most movies and tv of today..
a lot of people use them
plus iCloud is an apple thing so they kinda needed to reference the iPads and apple a bunch.. it went with the promise of the movie.. *shrug*
if it isn't apple there is always something being advertised.

Seeing apple products being used in a movie because they are popular is understandable. Advertising and product placement in movies is also understandable, and I would actually prefer a little bit of product placement rather than when they make up the stupid fake brands to seem like a real product.

But there is a HUGE difference between that and having the entire movie literally revolve around apple products. The plot was entirely about apple products (guy gives ipads to everyone and buys new ones all the time, records sex tape on ipad, puts it onto icloud so everyone can see it, has to go around getting all of the ipads back), the dialogue was constantly talking about it (great construction, great camera, I use it for everything, blah blah) and it felt so forced.

It's like someone from apple had a good friend in hollywood and said "Hey, let's make a feature length apple commercial." It was ridiculous.
And the fact that the movie was pretty bad, thin plot, stupid characters, etc just makes the terrible product placement more noticeable. The story wasn't there, the writing was bad, so the only reason you can think the movie was made is to promote apple.

Plus it was even worse for me since I'm not really a big fan of apple. I like their computers and that's it, but even then I still need to have a windows as well because there are so many technical things that are difficult or nearly impossible to do on macs.

On top of that I think the biggest examples of product placements in the movie were some more subtle moments. For example the only non Apple computer is the only computer in the movie that breaks. Also that the coke guy used his iPhone to light his fireplace.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that though. It's not as if there can't be great directors and writers and production designers etc. literally doing commercials--and that's where a lot of folks start out, anyway. I've seen plenty of commercials that I'd like to see turned into feature-length works. It seems like folks have a ridiculous bias against commercials as artworks, just like they have biases against TV episodes, made-for-TV and made-for-DVD movies, or in other milieus, production music (music made for "industrial" use), jingles, commercial pop music, visual design work, and all sorts of things. Those attitudes are probably wrapped up in the old art vs. commerce paradigm, but that paradigm is pretty ignorant and it doesn't really reflect what any working artists are doing.

The entire movie was just a dull commercial for Apple. Don't care, I'm never buying one.

reply

I was more surprised that it was ipads and not Sony tablets, given that the film was made by Sony.

reply

All the way a full length Apple commercial in association with YouPorn, and notice how after all the porn site name dropping, they never once mention the names of it's biggest rivals i.e. xvideos, xHamstar
I rated this mega ad 4 stars
