Medical shows drive me nuts!

I work at a hospital. On Saving Hope a new administrator came along and decided to eliminate the transplant program (dumb move). Rather than let the program go through attrition (no new transplant patients) the doctors are told to have the patients transferred, and he told them where to move them to. The patients were TOLD where they were getting moved to, without warning. So here are my complaints.
1. Hospitals are a business. You don't eliminate a money-maker.
2. Patients have choices of hospitals. You don't tell them where they are going.
3. No hospital ever eliminates a program in this manner. We have done this at my hospital. It is planned. Vetted by committee and not dictated by one despot. It's eliminated gradually so you don't alienate the cash cow, I mean patient.
4. They would lose more business than just the transplant patients, because this is going to cause customer complaints. Every hospital has a customer service department and their sole purpose is to respond to and fix complaints. This has disaster written all over it. Someone tells a friend what happened. That friend is going to have very expensive elective surgery. They will never pick this hospital. They tell another friend why they chose Hospital B over Hope. New friend will not go to Hope. And so on.

It was also established in this episode there are 23 hospitals in the city. With that kind of competition they can't afford to lose business over the decision of one jackass beaurocrat.

Now I know these are just characters so I blame the idiotic writers. Don't they do any research, or do they just sit around thinking up stupid storylines?

I'm just curious if you are American?

Healthcare in Canada isn't the same. Most hospitals are non profit and not all procedures are offered at every hospital in a city so you don't always get a choice in where to go. Transplants wouldn't be considered a cash cow.

Ok, you got me. Such a great tirade and I forgot the show was Canadian! But the new guy did talk about money . . .
