Why are these films classed as one movie?

As the title suggests.

It is my understanding that parts one and two were released a week apart, and I assume that as it's two trips to the cinema, with two ticket purchases then it shouldn't be classed as one film.

I realise that it's one story, but so is something like 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay' which has it's two parts listed as two films.

I don't see why two films released a week apart should be treated differently from two films released a year apart.

I'm interested to know this as well. I haven't seen either one yet, but they are definitely 2 separate movies everywhere but on IMDB.

Actually, Nymphomaniac is a better example of a film listed separately on IMDB with a similar release schedule and production to Gangs of Wasseypur.

The only reason the film was released in two parts was that no distributor was going to release a 5 hour long film. It's not good for business. The film was intended to be a single film.

And the reason I think that it is listed as one film on IMDb would be that the first release of the film, i.e. at Cannes, was just one part, as a whole. Rather all the releases before the theatrical release were done as one part.

If going by Netflix I thought this was a TV series.

As the Movie was long at 5 hours(It covers almost 5 Decades of a Gang War covering 3 generation in a Dangerous City in India) the Presenters decided to divide it in 2 parts to suit Indian Audience Preference (2.5 Hours or less). The same should look good as Mini Series also of half hour each. Did u got the chance to see the Netflix version? Share your experience!

It was first screened at Cannes as 1 movie.
