shareIts sort of my pointless aim to watch every film that has ever entered the top 250. These type of biased films kill the list (I admit not as much as blockbusters). While older films like Lagaan and Swades deserve their place on the list, films like Kahaani, OMG, and Barfi really don't. It's not just India, there are a ton of Russian and Turkish films no-one has ever heard of with ridiculous scores (Winters Sleep had a 9.8 and over 1000 votes before it was even released).
Now some insights from an English Man and his opinions about Bollywood films:
Kahaani has a really bad twist. I've forgotten most of the rest of it.
Barfi had some pretty flashy cinematography but the film was too long and not funny as it was trying to be. Like an Indian version of Amelie. But sh*t.
OMG was just plain bad. No redeemable qualities. Just a stupid film.
Rang de Basanti is debatable. I thought it was 2/3 *beep* around doing nothing and acting like idiots and 1/3 really inappropriate action that feels really out of place. The last half an hour is epic, which is probably why the rating is so high (because a fantastic ending can really make an average film phenomenal).
3 Idiots on the other had is a masterpiece. Catchy songs, great characters, brilliant story, and it doesn't waste a minute of running time.
The main problem with Lagaan is that it is far too long. If they kept it to two hours it would be a good watch, but it really overstays its welcome. It still has some great moments
Swades was the first Bollywood film I saw. I liked it, but it was a slog to get through. 3 1/2 hours was the longest film I had seen at the time.
If you want to watch an Indian film watch The Apu Trilogy or anything by Satyajit Ray. He was the king of Indian cinema and has made about 15 incredible films.
I don't know why I reviewed every Bollywood film I've seen. But hey. I'm tired. It's past 2am. I should sleep.
*IMDB top 250 is not a list of best movies. It's a simply a list of popularity.
Bollywood films are not everyone's cup of tea. Not everyone likes listening to songs halfway through a film.
*Films which are highly rated by non-regular voters are not taken into account on top 250. Normally, I don't like Nuri bilge Ceylan movies despite the fact that almost all his movies are award winning films but I liked Winter's Sleep. The film's rating has nothing do to with Turkish voters. More than 250 US voters rated it 8.1. When the DVD comes out in the USA, the rating may go lower but I think it will stay somewhere close to an 8. It's easy to talk through your hat when it comes to films you haven't seen.

What's with this guy? Barring 3 Idiots (which I think is the weakest of them all), if you didn't like any of the movies you mentioned, you should probably stop watching Hindi cinema, cause it seems it is certainly not your cup of tea. Maybe it's not the films, but the culture and the way these movies are presented is the thing that is bothering.
Either way, you get the message.
