Martin Scorsese loved this film

Martin Scorsese loved this film and sent a letter to the director Anurag Kashyap appreciating him. Here's the letter: http://images.bollywoodhungama.com/img/feature/13/mar/Anu123rag.jpg

I see a lot of foreigners getting bothered by this film in top 250. They rate this film 1 star straightaway. Why are you so prejudiced against Indian movies? I don't expect you to rate it 10 out of 10. But no matter what, it isn't any piece of crap to rate it 1 star. Even if you rate something like 5 or 6 stars, I can understand that you have done a fair analysis of the movie on your part and given it a rating based on your own taste and perception of movies. But rating it 1 star clearly shows your prejudice against Indian movies.

One of the greatest film-makers ever has loved this film. Critics all around the world have showered praises on this film. There has got to be something, right?

reply

No. It's a polite note, not a love letter. The movie is sh*t.

Although the scene where what's-his-name and what's-her-name were being all romantic outside and a goat wanders into the frame right behind them, then proceeds nibbling on a bush, completely ruining the shot AND NOBODY GIVES A F#*K was pretty hilarious. Still a 1.

reply

No, the goat did not ruin the shot, I think it was beautiful that there was a goat behind the couple doing whatever it wanted, it adds to the realism of the film.

That said, I gave GOW a generous 5. Felt like a very well shot soap opera with guns, no appreciation of human life at all, huge characters get killed and nobody gives a damn, and most of all, ridiculous length.

I find Indian cinema to be crude escapism barring the odd exception. Gangs of Wasseypur is much more than an exception - its exceptional!

I've seen Part 1 which was absolutely riveting. Now starting Part 2 although concerned that the central protagonist Sardar Khan is gone.
