Toby Joe's Son?

I kept expecting them to have a big reveal about Toby being Joe's son. If Joe and Julie broke up soon after or right at the end of high school and they were teenagers in the 90s, that would make Toby just about the right age if Julie had ended up pregnant at the time.

Is it just me or was this ever a part of the script and it was just dropped?

A riot of color in a dreary, grey world.

I felt the same way!

That whole angle of Toby calling her mom seemed weird. She went to high school w/ Joe who graduated in '98, which would make him about 32 in 2012. We get the feeling she's supposed to be Joe's age (even though the actress is 7 years older than Brandon Routh), but even if she were a senior when he was a freshman (unlikely to have been a couple in that case), the oldest she would be in 2012 is about 35. For her to have a 15- 18 year old son would mean that she was 14 - 20 when he was born. And then she got her PhD.

what does the actresses' real age have anything to do with her age in the movie? You are a moron.

Go ahead and cast Betty White for Spring Break part 2, genius

Typical, you take the most extreme example you can find to make a feeble rebuttal.
Hollywood often hires actors that are older than the characters they play. Some examples are found in Grease and Yentl and many many more.
However, that is not even the point. Whatever the real age of the actress does not prove or disprove whether Toby is Joe's son. It is the age of the character she is playing that is important. Think about it.
You say "we get the feeling" they are similar in age? They used to date in high school, so obviously they are similar in age. Really, you didn't get that?
The plausibility that Toby is Joe's son is there but the writers. director, etc...did not take it in that direction.

The reason I looked up the actress' age is because her character looked noticably older than Routh's character. The examples in Grease, etc didn't cause such a visceral reaction. My example might've been extreme, but you seem to have gotten the point that an actor's age really does impact the audiences' reaction to the character.
"However, that is not even the point. Whatever the real age of the actress does not prove or disprove whether Toby is Joe's son. It is the age of the character she is playing that is important."
Of course it doesn't prove the point, that's why I mentioned her age in parenthesis as an aside.
"You say "we get the feeling" they are similar in age? They used to date in high school, so obviously they are similar in age. Really, you didn't get that?"
Did you fully read my original post? The 2nd sentence is "She went to high school w/ Joe..."
When i wrote similar in age, I didn't mean they were just in high school at the same time, but that I think there were supposed to be in the same grade. That makes her looks even harder to swallow, and suspension of disbelief is harmed further. If they were in the same grade, then she would also have been about 32 at the time of the movie, which would mean that she would've been 14-17 when her son (now 15-18) was born. She didn't look pregnant in her flashback high school cheerleader pic, lol. And then she got her PhD. Ridiculous.

Why'd you get so worked up anyhow? Are you one of those advocates for older actresses or something?

reply

Well, raising a kid on her own AND getting a PhD at the same time could have aged her quicker resulting in her looking older than Joe. lol

Seriously though...did the movie say when exactly they were in high school and graduated(at least Joe)? I'm going to have to watch this again and pay attention for that detail if it did.

Watch your tongue, boy, if you like this job.
LIKE this job!?!

His championship that he lost senior year was 1998, with High School normally starting at age 14 for freshman, that would give... 14 years before the movie if it was set in 2012.

He should have been the rival coaches son. That would cause some more conflict. Raise the stakes, and give the film more oomf.
