Why does every one think this is a copy of battle royale?

Watch sliders season 3 ep 1 Rules of the game. It came out 4 years before BR . It's on Netflix.

reply

Because Battle Royale is the first famouse movie that used people under 18 fighting eachother in "games till death". therefore any movie with similar premise will forever be labeled as a copy by people that dont know how things work.

I think you forgot about 'Lord of the Flies' but you are close. It's more like BR is the only movie these people have heard about that has this concept in it. It's not that BR is famous, it isn't. It has a certain amount of notoriety now, but it's still not famous. It's a movie some people may have heard of, but very, very few had seen. And that includes those who kicked up this fuss. They never saw it till after THG came out in 2012. That's when the DVD finally went on sale. It's interesting that the actual BR DVD went on sale in March 2012 and made No50 in the April 2012 DVD chart. It was No 100 in May and in June it wasn't on the chart at all. So much for popularity.

Could we stop repeating this lie, please?

I actually bought a copy of 'Lord of the Flies' hoping for some death match action, but it turned out to be the (extremely dull) story of some British school kids who get shipped on an island and the social order that is created among them.

Zzzzzzzzzzz 

reply

Well Dippy, you just proved that your know as much about 'The Lord Of The Flies' as you do about 'The Lord Of The Rings'. Nothing at all. You could at least read the Sharp Notes. But it wouldn't kill you to actually read a proper book now and again. You could even try reading 'Battle Royale'. It's a bit big and fairly dense but if you got it and kept a dictionary alongside to help with the big words you could get through it in a coupe of years.

Battle Royale was a very popular cult film in America well before the Hunger Games.

In 2009, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino praised Battle Royale as the best film he had seen in the past two decades, stating that, "If there’s any movie that’s been made since I’ve been making movies that I wish I had made, it’s that one."

Suzanne Collins should have admitted a long time ago that she plagiarized Battle Royale. Then there wouldn't be so many angry BR fans on these boards. It is a slap in the face to Asian cinema. It's even more obvious with the continuation of the sequels in parallel with the sequel of Battle Royale.

No, it wasn't. It was never shown in North America and that includes Canada. Now there were a few people who were curious about Tarantino's statement, but not very many. After all he was the one who said it was unknown in the US. This is not the film's fault but no one can say that BR was well known and had a large following, because it wasn't. This was proved when the DVD was al last released and it didn't sell, even when marketed on THG coattails.

Tarantino saw the film in Japan and again he mentioned the fact that it was unknown in the US. And by 2009 Collin's book was already on the Best Sellers List.

Why should she admit to a lie to satisfy some trolls' sad delusions? The film was unknown, it's biggest proponent said so in that interview you mention. You really should look up the hard facts instead of believing what you read on a troll post. Hand on heart, when did you first know about the film, let alone watch it? If you ever did. You mention the film, when did you read the book?

These numbers seem to indicate that BR is at least 6 times as famous as LotF.

I like reviews from people who put their money where their mouths are. Would you like the number of schools where it is required reading? Or the number of reviews on GoodReads.

Would it not be more fitting to compare Battle Royale with Peter Pan, the Goonies, Gilligan's Island or any other movie that has kids stuck on island?
Believe me. They have.

One moron even claimed BR was ripoff of Lord of the Rings xD

And here i thought we were discussing movies, not books....

Also i dont think you know what the word "popularity" means. its not the same as "high ranking".

When you are talking about BR you can only talk about the book which was published in the US. The film is moot because Tomie Corp wouldn't pay for it to be released in the US. And as for popularity, well that is quite important. Which is why it is so interesting to see just how unpopular BR is since it was released. It was released in March 1012 on DVD and Blu-ray. It reached No 50 in the April 2012 chart and then it fell to below 200. That's as far down as the charts go. The sales ranking number is on the Amazon sites, B&N sites and even on the Walmart charts. Go and look for it. You wont find it. It's biggest fan club on the Internet boasts 500 members...worldwide. Or you could look at YouTube and count the views it's had on there since it was put up You can check out the reviews here here on the IMDB, the activity on the relevant page. I rather take that as a measure of popularity. . These things can be found you know.

That's an odd claim regarding BR's fanclub, as there are over seven million members in the club I joined, and it is by no means the largest.

Sure, there might have been a small boost in popularity among some US highschoolers who understandably haven't heard of foreign movie despite its being well-known among the previous generation, but it didn't really add much to BR's status. While the book sales took off because it was a must-read for anyone who enjoyed the Hunger Games series and wanted more. I don't think you can really chart the film's popularity on a handful of western-based retail sites. Let's not forget BR's popularity grew even in countries where it was never even officialy released.

reply

the problem with your entire claim here is that you think US = whole world

---------------------------------------------
Applied Science? All science is applied. Eventually.

reply

As I live in Scotland I hardly think so. I'm well aware that BR has been shown twice on Film 4 in the past 15 years and if you order the Novel you can get it from Amazon. You can't get it at Waterstones or Forbidden Planet. And the manga is unheard of. This I know because I get mangas for my grandson.

In which case you should have realized that US charts and releases should matter very little considering it only accounts for 5% of population.

It's where Suzanne Collins lives and works and where she wrote 'The Hunger Games' series. It is rather important to her. Do you understand the meaning of context?

The context here is people who watched the movie and possibly comapred it to another movie. its irrelevant where or who Suzanne Collins is.

yes, battle royale was and is original. it may not seems so on paper, but then what does? no one has brought Kinji Fukasaku's surrealism to the screen before or since in the way lynch did. it is a testament to him that it was made at all let alone become such a huge phenomenon.
Fukasaku is a creative genius. Francis Lawrence is, and always will be, a talentless, derivative and over blown name. he got lucky with Constatine. a film in itself which is totally unoriginal in which the twist is obvious in the first five minutes.

reply

Honestly, under this logic, Battle Royale would be a rip off of Running Man and Running Man would be a rip off of Most Dangerous Game.

Summeriris:

BR was shown once on UK TV 7 years ago at 2 AM in the morning. BR2 has never been shown to the best of my knowledge on UK TV

Speilburger:
I've certainly not seen it on UK TV - indeed I was completely unaware that the film even existed until the troll(s) stated whining about it on these boards

Same old flawed logic as summeriris.

You keep a list of movies you never new existed and their TV listing times over the years? Even though you were never aware of its existence.

You are aware of every movie to have ever been shown on UK TV.

And you memorise the TV guide since the early 2000s?



Film 4 and Channel 4 do not have any listings to ever have shown Goodfellas.

Because Channel 4 is where it premiered on terrestrial TV and was shown for many years after, but.........a big BUT there is no evidence on the internet of this film ever been shown.

So by your logic Goodfellas has never been shown on those Channels.

Because the internet says so and you cant prove it 
