I LOVE Battle Royale, but let's stop with the BS

So what if Hunger Games is like BR? You don't see people bashing authors and accusing them of ripping off Bram Stoker just because they are writing books about vampires, or others who write about haunted mansions of ripping off Shirley Jackson (who wasn't the first one to write about haunted mansions).

The story of BR is much better and exciting than THG, this can't be taken away from you. You people are simply jealous because the HG movies make hundreds of millions while BR (the movie) didn't get the recognition you think it deserves.

Now, get over it. It's not plagiarism, it's a story that has a lot in common with BR but also a lot of differences.

English is not my primary language, but at least I speak more than you.

Of course you don't. Bram Stoker didn't invent the concept of vampires; vampires were an age-old folklore that he based Dracula around. So why would people accuse anyone for "ripping him off" if they wrote about vampires as well?

or others who write about haunted mansions of ripping off Shirley Jackson (who wasn't the first one to write about haunted mansions).

What on earth are you talking about? No one INVENTED the "haunted house" concept. Just like with vampires, that existed as folklore for centuries. So why would anyone accuse anyone of writing about haunted novels just because Shirley Jackson did? You couldn't have chosen TWO WORST EXAMPLES to argue against the case that Suzanne Collins ripped off Battle Royale.

You people are simply jealous because the HG movies make hundreds of millions while BR (the movie) didn't get the recognition you think it deserves.

OMG, the lame "you're just jelly" defense. Man, I thought people retired this stupid comment ages ago. I can't remember the last time I heard someone say that.

That doesn't stop you bitching about a 2000 year old history of Gladiatorial combat being used by Collins. You bitch about something you seem to know nothing about and you don't want to know anything about. I think you just enjoy bitching.

Maybe becuz the preface to Battle Royale clearly states that the story was inspired by Japanese Pro Wrestling, and nothing whatsoever at all to do with the Romans? Just a thought...

reply

I have the novel, no it doesn't. That is just a great example of you and Atomic Girl just trying to prove a point. It wouldn't be so bad but you can't prove a point with a lie. It just proves you are willing to lie.

You do know what lying is don't you?

Thats odd because my edition of Battle Royale, (American translation, 54th printing) also clearly states that the story was inspired by Japanese Pro Wrestling, and nothing whatsoever at all to do with the Romans.

Listen BR was a great movie saw it way back in the day and my jaw dropped, hands down my fav japanese movie other than akira, and yes i will say that hunger games used br for inspiration, but there are still many differences, this being said BR is still my favorite, but BR2 guys comon it wasnt that good...it was ok at best.

Its not so much like BR as it is like BR2 (the 2nd act of middle bits, specifically) Its not that well-known, but the extent to which it is copied is something unheard-of in Hollywood ripoffs until now.

Wow, BR the first book ever with a love triangle. If BR is the only book you've ever read.

reply

Katniss = Shuya
Noriko = Petta
Chigusa = Gale

This love-triangle appears in ALL carnations of Battle Royale, of which the Hunger Games is neither the first, nor the best.

The sad thing is, too many people online like to remark about films they didn't actually see, or did see, but with a very closed mind, especially where remakes are concerned. Many will even make shallow qualifying statements about how they wanted to like the film, but then indicate they expected disappointment, and by the extreme reverence they ascribe the films predecessor and/or the passion of their distaste for it's copy, it's obvious they really didn't see it with both eyes open, and shouldn't have any merit ascribed their arrogantly bloated opinions. Even "professional" reviewers are guilty of this, people who are supposed to be delivering reviews that are more objective, more experienced, and more studied than the scant trivia anyone can easily dig up (or make up) at imdb

You might get better results on the actual Hunger Games board, as Mockingjay is strictly a BATTLE ROYALE II: Requiem ripoff.

reply

I agree that both Hunger Games and Battle Royale are similar, but there are a lot of differences between the two. Also, people need to stop comparing the two.

I came here to ask a question about Mockingjay, and I can't believe this board is still full of people complaining about the similarities to Battle Royal. Yes, the story is somewhat similar, but a lot of stories are similar.

I saw Battle Royal and Battle Royal II. The first one was okay, but seemed more like a slasher film than anything else, although cleverly done. I didn't find II that interesting. Hunger Games doesn't even seem like the same genre. But whatever. Some of you people, when you get a bone you just can't let it go, can you?
