Is Hunger Games a blatant Rip-off of Battle Royale?

I must admit I haven't yet red Hunger Games, but the reason has a lot to do with the description of the plot. I read Battle Royale and loved it and Hunger Games seems like a blatant rip-off. Am I wrong? Is Hunger Games different enough and good enough to warrant my time?

Edit: People seem to be pretty split, so I am going to read the books and update this. Edit2: By read the books, I mean the Hunger Games. I have read Battle Royale.

Edit3: I have now read the Hunger Games. After reading them, I think its possible she came to the overall premise on her own. Also, I found the books enjoyable, but not great. My issues with the books are as follows:

Katniss - She is unlikable and very shallow for being the focal point of the entire series. She reminds me far too much of Bela Swan. The love triangle between her Peeta and Gale didn't help either. You might say "but she was capable of taking care of herself, unlike Bela" and I would completely disagree. She survived the same way Bela survived because she had a bunch of men pining over her saving her life.

The Hunger Games - How exactly does making people give up their children to a death fight once a year quell rebellion? Its as if Suzanne Collins couldn't find a way to make teenagers have to be in single survivor death match so she decided to go with a completely nonsensical reason. I mean, if there is one thing that would breed anger and make people want to revolt it would be the Hunger Games.

Twilight - Honestly, I couldn't help but get rid of the constant twilight taste as I read the books. Teenage girl is a loner, doesn't realize she's beautiful and all the guys love her. She loves both, but, must choose one and both guys reach a tacit agreement with each other so they can protect her. She can do no wrong, they love her completely.

The forced loss of life - The campaign to take down the Capitol was horribly run. Why would they ever have to send so many people in when they had complete air superiority after they took District 2? Makes no sense. Hey, we could just bomb the hell out of them or maybe land a special team on the presidents mansion or sneak one of our many spies into the presidents mansion, but instead, we'll send in our most important propaganda people to die senselessly. Makes no sense.

That leads me to the main issue with the book, which is, everything in it just seemed so contrived. There was no substance or depth to the story. It seemed like Suzanne Collins had an idea to pit teenagers against each other on reality TV, but didn't know how to do that in a way that made a lot of sense. Her idea of the Hunger Games didn't emerge from a deeper idea, it was the idea and she tried to fit a story around it.

There was just too little substance to really feel connected to the whole thing. Why did the US start fighting itself? What the hell is the Capitol? A giant city? Are there more cities, towns, etc? Why are they still mining coal when they seem to have far better power sources and technological advances for it to be useful. It was all so thin.

So the story was entertaining and I can see that it might make for an entertaining movie (at least the first book), but it wasn't a great story and it wouldn't be anywhere near as popular if it didn't hit the Twilight demographic. It really just seemed like a Michael Bay film, all visuals and grandiosity at the expense of the plot.

I've asked several times what the motives of the government in BATTLE ROYALE was supposed to be and I've never gotten a coherent answer. One answer is that they are trying to terrorize rebellious youth into submission, yet the victims know nothing about the Battle Royale thing so how can they be terrified? Another answer is "population control". Killing 50 people is horrifying but doesn't really make a dent in overall population. A third answer is that they want to see if the youths come up with interesting strategies that they can copy, but that's ENDER'S GAME.

So it seems to me that Batlle Royale has the same flaw that you are attributing to HUNGER GAMES.

Suzanne Collins stated that the Hunger Games and the story in general were based on the Roman Empire and the Coliseum battles, and the names of a lot of the characters such as Cato reflect that. It wasn't a rip-off, though they are admittedly similar.

reply

he Hunger Games, adapted from the Suzanne Collins novel, is set in a dystopian future where children are forced to take part in a televised death match where only one can survive. The reason? To punish citizens for a past rebellion and to prevent them from rising up again.

No, Flicka's post is a rip off of the 2000 other posts he has put up since the first Hunger Games movie. He keeps banging on that drum but it doesn't produce anything like an original beat.

That;s true, but really has nothing to do with the discussion, becuase only both battle royale and the hunger games feature the dame the characters, but with their genders swapped to appeal to the American youth market (Shuuya/Katniss, Chigusa/Gale and Noriko/Peeta).

No Flicka, what you are getting all het up over is nothing more than props. The stories are different because they are about different things.

in Battle Royale the killing is meant to cause suspicion and distrust among the general populace as a whole; because if innocent and idealistic teenagers can betray one another that easily, then there can be no belief in collective effort to topple the regime.
====================================================================================

Haven't read Battle Royale, so I can't make sense of this. Are the youth carrying out a coherent rebellion, or are they just being anarchic? If there is a coherent rebellion, why did the villains kidnap teens from a school field trip, who obviously AREN'T rebelling, and why should their behaviour in the battle disillusion the real rebels? If it is just a lot of anarchy, why are the villains worried about "collective effort to topple the regime"? If the villains are publicizing the battles, why don't the kidnapped teens know about it? If they aren't, what good are they as propaganda? Besides, wouldn't the people seeing the propaganda realized that the battling teens are basically acting at gunpoint, not "betraying one another so easily"?

As far as I can tell the BR writer thought up the central battle first and then tried to come up with a background that "explained" it.

I seriously doubt Susanne Collins when she claims that she wasn't inspired by Battle Royale.

You do realize BR isn't famous" or "popular" in America right? THG serously helped you little story.

Just because Collins is an author doesn't mean she is aware of every book ever written. She states she got her ideas from Rome and Greek stories. Her plot and names fit this idea much better than if she was inspired by BR.

Get over yourself buddy, your book isn't that amazing that someone wants to copy it. Plus THG is much more fleshed out.

Because me and you are no where near an appropriate sample size to base an opinion off?

Way to kill your logic.

reply

Also, now that Collins copied the the story for the US teenage demographic, it seems that Battle Royale II has become mainstream, although to its credit, it enjoyed a healthy cult status prior to that.

When I heard about this carbon copy I was immediately disgusted with the idea of why the people who make movies at the level of 'Sharknado' would try to remake such an iconic classic in the dytopian world. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and watched it. I have never been more angry with a movie. Imagine Titanic being remade, but the ship doesn't sink and everyone lives happily ever after. That is what they did to this movie. I was blown away by how literally EVERY scene and plot point this movie is known for was neutered entirely. I know remakes tend to change some details for the audience of that country etc, but they basically wrote a whole new Twilight subplot 30 minutes in. This would have been far better off if they took their plot of 'BFF's live happily ever after' and just made an original movie. Worst excuse for a remake, I knew they wouldn't do BATTLE ROYALE 2: REQUIEM justice, but this was just pathetic.

Then what's the point of copyright law?

reply

[deleted]

That's ironic. I'm hearing that copyright laws apply in several countries.

P.S. Your "review" on 'Poppies Are Also Flowers' is absolutely ludicrous. People like you are subjects to my troll-mentality threads.

But it wasn't an American property. The novel was badly translated into English, then it was pulled by the author, re-written and republished...after THG. The movie was unknown in North America because it was never released there. I don't know why you never mention these facts because they are rather important. You just ignore them and pretend that they don't count because you want to make BR more important than it is.

Also, who can forget the pressure mounting on stores like Walmart to comment on the “Battle Royale” controversy that sparked national outrage in the US in the wake of the Columbine school shooting.

Walmarts still sells a huge array of Battle Royale merchandise- from T-shirts to camo bedding, posters, watches, toy trucks, novelty neck braclets, clothing, jewellery and even bottle openers.

Heated debates on everything from free speech rights to the Christian cleansing in America dominated the news for days after the Battle Royale started airing regularly on cable, right about the same time when Collins started writing her version. Especially after popular cast member Tatsuya Fujiwara was suspended from the Oprah show and the host network (A&E) for offending the gay and lesbian community.

Citation needed.

You mean around about the time that Trarantino did his interview and brought it to the attention of his fans? I'm sure that there were a few people in the US who actually visited a country at some time where the film was shown. And I'm quite sure that many hats with film logos were imported from the far East. I do wonder what the population of the part of rural @Utah knew about 'Battle Royale' though. The fact that the hats were available in that gas station (do you have the reciept or the hat) Doesn't actually say that it sold well. And it's strange that I can't find a single stockist on line today.

China, not Japan.

reply

Yes I do realise where Walmart sources a lot of their goods. I'm sorry I don't know what a bobble head is, to me it is a hat. That still doesn't make the film anything like well known in the US. That happens when a film is not released in the country.

Well thank you for that information. Now if only you could learn that when a film is not released in a country something like that is a fluke. Especially in Utah.

HG is a blatant rip off BR. I am 100% sure the author of HG read/watched BR and decided to rip it off, only westernise the story and make it more girly. Much like the stupid author of Twilight watched a few vampire flics and decided to write her garbage to spawn hordes of brain dead 12 year old girls. Ah well, at least those people don't have to die without ever reading a book, even if it can hardly be called that.

reply

Try again. That's not even from 'Battle Royale'.

Do you really think that lie is going to work?

I have the first translation of BR, please don't tell me it was well translated. And I have never heard of any international awards won by Battle Royale. Post the link to the relevant page if you can and I will bookmark it. I have never said the the novel is without merit but I can well understand why Takami rewrote and republished it after THG was published. I can post you the link to the list of Awards THG received, would you like it. I warn you the list of awards is extensive. The THG book has been translated into 26 languages. The only award for book translations in the US was established in 2008, I don't think they included books published in 2000/20001/20002/2003. And as BR has had an official release in the US, (it didn't go far) please don't try to say that it ever had an unofficial one.

Not your user name, but calling yourself 'retarded', that really is nasty. I wouldn't use the name of a tragic medical condition as an insult to my worse enemy, never mind myself. But you do it. Strange.
