The emotional aspect of the movie

One reason I think The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1 is the best of the series so far is that it is very powerful emotionally. Some of my favorite scenes are:

1) The opening scene: Who else finds it very dark and also sad how Katniss is going mad in the pipes? It is heartbreaking to see just how shattered she is. Also, a few minutes into the movie, how Finnick says he wishes they were all dead, so that they would not have to endure any more heartbreak or pain. It's just such a dark, yet powerful scene.

2) Katniss' return to District 12: You hear the slow, sad music when she returns to her home in the Victor's Village. The music portrays how alone and sad she feels, returning to such a dead, empty town.

3) Katniss' speech in District 8: If you pay close attention, you see the reactions of Boggs and the others as they listen to her emotional and angry speech, showing just how much power she is. Also, when the scene ends with a close-up of her face, how destroyed and helpless she feels. Just so powerful and depressing.

4) Right after the District 7 uprising in the woods: For about 15-20 seconds, it shows Katniss just sitting in her room quietly, not even moving, just moving Peeta's pearl around in her fingers. The silence in this short period again shows how preoccupied she is with the whole situation, and how she is just lost in her confusion and sadness.

5) The hunting scene: Watching the elk lift up its head when Katniss is about to shoot it, and how innocent it looks. When Katniss puts the bow down, just watching the expression on her face shows the realization she has come to about war and killing, and how much it has scarred her. Also, when she and Gale sit by the river, and Katniss is in total harmony listening to the rush of the water and looking at the woods, almost coming back to her childhood in District 12. The music playing here is so peaceful, the music from The Hunger Games when Katniss receives the medicine from Haymitch when she is treed by the Careers.

6) The second return to District 12: The music is so depressing in this scene, and Gale's sadness in recounting the bombing of District 12. Just sooooooo sad. When they all go to Katniss' house, and how quiet the scene is with the slow music in the background. And Gale's comment about Katniss only paying attention to Gale when he is in pain. It shows how much emotional pain he is in.

7) The Hanging Tree: When Katniss first starts singing, Pollux is smiling as he listens to the music, but in the second stanza, his smile turns into a sad frown, as he realizes how dark the music actually is. And on the way back to District 13, the only ones awake are Katniss and Gale, and neither of them talk; they just stare in silence, with the song playing in the background. The people in District 5 risking their lives, charging towards the Peacekeepers, with the water in the back; it's one of the most powerful scenes of the movie.

8) Katniss' and Finnick's talk: When Katniss says: "How do you live with it?" meaning the emotional pain, and his response: "It takes ten times as long to put yourself back together than it does to fall apart" or something along the lines of that. Does anyone else pay attention to the violin (I think) in the background, and the slow, sad music it produces in this scene. It is a slow scene, but so powerful.

9) Post-bombing of District 13: When they are outside in the wreckage, and when Cressida is trying to give Katniss directions about the propo. How the camera focuses on Katniss' face, how she just stares into blank space, coming to the realization that Snow punishes her by hurting Peeta, and how he might kill him. When she begins to have a panic attack, it's just so hard to watch her fall apart like that after having seen her in the two previous movies.

10) When Snow reveals that he knows they are in the Tribute center, and then quickly cuts the signal. When Katniss starts crying and repeating: "Did I lose them both tonight?" That was the most emotional she has been throughout this entire series so far. Jennifer Lawrence does a PERFECT JOB here. It seems childish, but it shows just how helpless and scared she feels inside. Anyone else think she did a fantastic job in this scene?

I know this is a lot of heavy analyzation here. But does anyone else pay attention to these points I made, not just the facial expressions and acting and plot, but also the music and how it adds to the emotion? Does anyone think this is the most mature and best of the series thus far?

THANK YOU! God I thought I was the only one! I LOVED this movie, and I think it's the best of the franchise so far. I seemed to be the only one who understood all of this. How much pain Katniss and Finnick were in. I'm so glad you made this post, because EVERYTHING you wrote was exactly my thoughts on this whole movie. Definitely one of the top 3 of 2014.

You're welcome. I'm so glad! It seems that most people on this board neither understand the purpose of this movie nor recognize its brilliance. To me, the split makes sense. The first part is about the media and how the rebels and the Capital use propaganda to influence the districts. Technically, it is not a total war; the war really has not started yet. The rebels try to move the districts to war, and the Capital tries to prevent the war. The other part of this movie is how Snow tries to bring down Katniss by punishing Peeta. It's Snow's idea to hijack Peeta and try to kill her that really sets her off and leads to the final spark to war. It is a set-up movie, but it is all about being on the brink of war, and how both sides try differently to either push it off the edge or keep it off the edge. Throughout the entire movie, Katniss is so depressed and reluctant to really be the Mockingjay, but after she realizes just ho twisted Snow is for hijacking Peeta, she embraces her role as the leader, and seeks total revenge in the next moive.Do you agree with me in this aspect?

Yes, like, FINALLY someone who understands this movie too and actually liked it! You're one of the few people I know of that appreciates this movie

reply

Btw what track on the score is the one where Katniss and Gale are hunting? Do you know?

reply

It is not on the Mockingjay- Part 1 score, but it is from The Hunger Games score. I believe it is called "Healing Katniss," but I'm not 100% sure. It is the music from the movie when Katniss sits in the tree when the Careers are beneath her and Haymitch sends the burn medicine.

reply

Yes, it's part of "Healing Katniss", an achingly beautiful theme.

Like you, I thought this movie was the best of all three films so far. I think it's because it did tell more of a story than just concentrating around the games. There was a darker element to this film as well. Katniss's mental state came to the surface more in this as well...I thought!

reply

Good analysis. It is nice to see someone that appreciates this movie. It is not "bad and terrible" like many say. Honestly, I swear, most people are only hating on this movie because for some reason it is "cool" to hate it. I think others only wanted more games so that's why they bash it. It is sad really. It is a good movie that many can't appreciate the mature aspect of war and propaganda.

It's a bit harsh to say it's sad that people dislike a film you like because it doesn't offer somethimg they want. I haven't rated any of them highly but the 'games' aspect of the first two was the more entertaining element. I wouldn't say I was expecting that in the third film but it was certainly less entertaining.
Nobody having watched Rocky 1 and 2 would expect the third film to be something like 12 Angry Men. Extreme example but best my tired brain can do at 4am.
Everyone enjoys something different about films as is their right. I?ritates me when people think those who enjoy the action element of films or even love non-stop action flicks like Jason Statham does (not my cup of tea) have a lesser opinion than those who love plot, subtelty and artistic direction.
A film can be well made, have great dialogue, direction and acting and still be boring and turgid.

That would all be fine if Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 was a well made film. It's a drawn out snooze fest. I personally didn't find much redeemable in it as a bridge to the finale or as a sequel to the two previous films. While I didn't like the first film much, I did enjoy the second as it was full of intrigue and I love a bit of politics. However, Part 1 did nothing but mope and the action sequences weren't anything to get too excited about. I'm not meaning to cause offence but I think the studio shot themselves in the foot when they broke the film up into two parts. Yes, they will make their money but they've done the audience and the source material a disservice. I could barely stomach Death Hallows Part 1 and that came from a novel which was stuffed with drama and action. Mockingjay should be one film.

My teenage angst has a body count

How can you say this? Action as the primary ingredient of a movie is lame. It's like junk food compared to dramatic storytelling involving characters we give a *beep* about. And not that I don't ever eat junk food but I'm at least aware of it when I do (enough so that I wouldn't count my opinion on it to be of much value).

Good action sequences can make a movie more appealing in the way that jewelery can sometimes make a woman more attractive. But a box full of jewelery does very little for me.

Is this to be an empathy test?

Hmmm. I seem to have missed this thread originally in all the BR clutter.

When people say that action is more entertaining it seems they mean that you don't
have to think to enjoy it. There's nothing wrong with liking action films. The
problem is expecting every film to be action heavy.

Their opinions are less educated.

Not if you have any appreciation for those qualities.

Totally agree.

Fantastic post. Great anaylsis and you're absolutely right. I hope others do pay attention to and appreciate these elements also.

reply

i'm watching it for the first time and i'm bored out of my skull. granted, I'm not a THG fan. i've seen all the films just to see what the hype is about, but Katniss is just not a likable protagonist.

reply

Who says a protagonist must be completely likeable? Real people are more complex.
Katniss is flawed but has a strong moral compass.

reply

What a delight to see there are still some fans that actually understand and appreciate the screenplay brilliance in Part 1.
This movie completely exceeds my initial expectations by a large margin. It's a mature, clever, and powerful masterpiece in every single way. The speech given by Katniss in front of the burning hospital stands out as one of the most astonishing and out-of-this-world performances I've seen in years.

I hope part 2 can serve as a perfect ending to this high-class franchise.

reply

Nice try. Tell me what genre does it lie? They started an action-adventure-thriller movie, gave people who like this genre a hope, then turned to Drama-sensational genre? TOTAL FLOP and failure. They could have made a separate movie in the genre you like and praise here.

This is a brilliant comment. People who don't like this film are largely the type who only want shoot-em-up movies. MJ1 is exactly what it was supposed to be, prelude to a war. You have a heavily damaged Katniss trying to deal with everything that's gone on, while at the same time dealing with what her own role has been.

Playing a character so shattered can't be easy, yet Jennifer Lawrence does it so well. And when fire is needed, such as her speech in District 8, the fire is there! And I love the scene just prior to that, where Katniss walks through the hospital, and people begin to recognize her. Until that moment, she has no idea how important she is to these people. She understands that, like it or not, she is the Mockingjay. You can see that realization dawning on Katniss' face.

Of course, Jennifer Lawrence is a brilliant actress, and she's only going to get better. The best example of her acting ability is at the end of Catching Fire, when Gale tells her "There is no District 12." The emotions that cross her face, from confusion to grief to anger to resolve, so clearly visible in her expressions, show just how great she is.

I intend to live forever.
So far, so good.
