Anna Friel .... oh dear

Nothing sadder, cinematically speaking, then seeing a potentially great film score an own goal with a major case of miscasting. Coogan and Winterbottom have great pedigree and I had great hopes for this but everytime the out of her depth Friel was on screen, stumbling through her scenes and failing to convince herself/fellow cast members, let alone the audience, with her performance ... well it was embarassing. Unless the character ON screen has a lot in common with Friel OFF screen (accent, look, age) then Im afraid shes totally lost, she can only ever be an extension of herself sadly. Her career has been built on luck rather then ability, her offscreen dating rather then her onscreen performances, a clear case of box office poison.

Mhm, mhm. Fun story.

In reality, though, she's great -- as usual.

Whenever Friel is mentioned in press reviews of this movie, the critics (without exception) say the exact opposite of the post above.

The most important critics are the audiences themselves, Ive spoken to quite a few Coogan/Film fans and one recurring opinion regarding THE LOOK OF LOVE is Friels inability to convince in the role. Sorry, your clearly a fan but too often shes out of her depth, shes a B-list soap actress who got lucky and is now hanging onto a fragile career by her fingertips.

I don't think anyone really cares who you've spoken to, or rather, claim to have spoken to, since it's obvious you're very alone in your opinion. ;)

Again: In a few minutes I found fifteen reviews from newspapers and websites that all point out how good she is in this, and not one even hinting at the opposite.

This is your (lonely) opinion and you're certainly entitled to it, I don't really have any interest in trying to convince you otherwise -- I'm just pointing a few things out to any others who might read your drivel.

And I guess you can call me a "fan", but in that case a fairly new one. I'd seen exactly one movie with her before this ("Land of the Lost") and my only "opinion" of her was that she was hot. Watching this, I found out she certainly can act as well.

You on the other hand, have been on your rants about her for years, it seems. Which makes it obvious you have something very personal against her that other people don't share, or care about. So you're welcome to keep yapping and f(l)ailing in your own little vendetta, I think it's clear this means a lot more to you than anyone else on the planet. Godspeed! :D

He's a fan so he has a reason to be here. Why is it so important for you to hate on her? You need help, pilgrim.

Her fanbase is clearly amongst the young who are easily pleased and have yet to learn what acting is. "SHES HOT" .... shes not even lukewarm.

To the two arguing about whether she did or didn't do a good job, no reason to get all worked up about it. You could pick the greatest actor/actress who you think ever lived, and find people who can't stand their various performances. No one person's opinion is better or worse than another. Just go with the flow and agree to disagree. On a slightly different note, I thought one of the best, and saddest scenes in the movie was the final one where Debbie is singing, and it felt like it was to her father. I was very interested if that was the real Debbie's voice. Sad scene.

It is rather than, not then

She did a good job.

Anna looks like Natalie Wood in this very poignant film. I wonder why people watch a film when they do not like the stars. I just don't get it. People are strange.

reply

Can't agree with you, sorry - I thought she was as good as everyone else, at the very least…

On the basis of this thread, I don't think you're qualified to speak with certainty about the feelings of 'the audience'!
