A question of geography

Both Nisos and Nisos 2 achieved higher scores than I love Karditsa and Larisa empisteftiko(Larisa Confidential) in IMDB but also in terms of popularity and critical opinion within Greece. My question is if the location played any role given that the movies are similar in many other respects. Is the island of Sifnos a more attractive location than the plain of Thessaly for an international audience and Greeks themselves?

reply

Yes, an island is, in any case, more attractive than a small semi-rural town, but the success of the movies have nothing to do with that.
I Love Karditsa and Larisa Empisteftiko are awful parodies with no story that just make fun of village people. Nisos have stories that just take place on an island, more interesting charecters and more fun. Despite the fact that i didn't really like Nisos either (Nisos 2 was definitely better than the first), the Stratos Markidis' movies are pure garbage no matter what towns they used on their titles.

I think that your observation is correct. I am of the opinion that an island of Aegean is more interesting to the audience than a village/town in Thessaly but in this particular case the crucial factor was that the Nisos movies were better than the movies situated in Thessaly. But you can not deny that they both tried to exploit the couleur locale to their advantage, Nisos with the fact that one of the central characters is a fisherman and the flashbacks to the island's past and the movies about Thessaly with their emphasis on the rustic accent and behaviour of the people portrayed.

Can't agree with you. It's like you're saying that a movie set on an island is better that a movie set on a village. Yes, the scenery in Nisos movies is more beautiful but that's not that makes them better movies.

Perhaps I was not clear enough. What I meant was that a movie that is located in an Aegean island has in very general terms an advantage over a movie located in Thessaly from the point that the general public would be attracted more by the first location than the second.

In the particular case we are discussing, as you have pointed out, the crucial factor was that the Nisos movies were better movies in terms of scenario, characters and director therefore that is the reason why the public liked them more than the Thessaly movies. Geography may have made the margin of victory larger for the Nisos movies but it was not the crucial factor for the sentiments of the public. We are not in disagreement. The only point has to do with the extent of influence that geography had.
