worried ... but hopeful

well i can't help but be worried when the 'son of the green goblin' gets hold of a cormac mccarthy novel to turn to film ... i heard also he has the rights to 'blood meridian' which is one of those novels that is called 'the novel that can't be filmed' ... it might be true ...

but i could see this book as a film tho it's a skilled director and screen-adapter needed to do it ...

i hold cormac mccarthy's writing on (or quite near) a level of hemingway, the most valuable american writer, and i do think mccarthy will get a nobel in literature ... he is such a stunning writer ... but some of his work just is too difficult to portray and too deep to convey thru film i think ... plenty of 'blood meridian' is like that ...

but on the bright side (i try to be positive when possible) seeing franco's working of 'howl' was really a startling and imaginative and enjoyable trip thru that masterwork of allen ginsberg mixing with ginsberg's own life in as well ... i was hesitant to watch that even but was pleased in the end ...

so maybe this will go well ...

any thoughts? hopes? predictions? :)

I saw it on Sunday.

I knew nothing about the book going into the movie as a heads up, so I think the plot had us a bit shocked.

I like Franco's direction, stylistically, I thought he did a great job, but there were moments where it felt like he was trying too had. Sometimes his stuff just comes off as pretentious to me, but that's just an opinion. It's definitely not going to get a wide release, it won't appeal to mainstream audiences, certainly more Art House, at the Q&A Franco said that's likely the route it will take anyways.

If there was a depth in the book, I think the movie kind of misses that. Again, I didn't read the book, so I spent a lot of time going 'oh my god what is he doing'

I think it's a hard book adaptation to screw up. It has shock value, which everyone loves, and it's fairly straight forward with zero nuance. The only problem I see is a lack of budget, and that might be what hurts the film. I guess we will see.

These are some movies of mine. Enjoy!

The trailer is doing its damnedest to market the thing as a no holds barred chase film, so I can't properly say until I've seen the film. The lead actor looks good, but apart from him I don't see anything special about this adaptation. You'd expect Franco to step up his game and do something interesting formally, I mean, he is adapting Cormac McCarthy, but the whole thing looks quite bland aesthetically. Still, I haven't seen the film yet, but so far the expectations are very low.
