I was always touched by the friendship between Pip and Herbert in the book. Herbert was so loyal and a huge help to Pip when he was in need. He guided him when he first came to London and risked his own position helping to hide and aid the escape of Magwich. Everyone should have a friend like Herbert!

I think herbert set up Magwitch and Pip.
How else would the police and soldiers know where to catch magwitch etc..
Dolge had already been taken car off by pip when they meet up... there is no way they where folowed after that.
As much as herbert is likeable... that plot hole make me wonder if they where trying to imply that even herbert was still dodgy and would do him in for a few dollars.
