Is Tonight the Last Episode?

I'm really confused by The Firm because apparently it was cancelled almost two months ago, but they moved it to Saturdays where it's continued to show almost as many new episodes as it did on Thursday night.

Is tonight (April 21st) the last episode or will there be more? Has it been cancelled or what's the official story?

reply

There are 22 episodes for this season. They've already completed filming them all and tonight's episode is #14. There are still 8 episodes left to air. They moved it to Saturday in February, but they had already paid for the production of all 22 episodes, so they will show them all. They've actually shown more episodes since moving to Saturday. They've already aired 8 episodes since moving it to Saturday and only 6 episodes aired previous to that, 2 on Sunday when it premiered and 4 on Thursdays. It was never officially cancelled by NBC just moved to Saturday, but I wouldn't bet on it getting a second season.

rycki1138, thanks for your post. I thought I read somewhere that the show was cancelled and only 13 hours were produced, which would have meant last week would be the last new episode I thought. However, my local TV listings show that NBC is not airing any episodes of The Firm tonight, but a movie called "Liberty Stands Still". Luckily I live in Canada, so a different network here should be airing a new episode at 10pm. :-)

Always consider the source when you read stuff like this.

The Firm is still in production (ep. 20 at the moment) and will wrap in mid-May. There's no reason to expect that NBC will not air all episodes.

To no one's surprise, NBC will most likely not buy any future episodes, but given that the broadcaster's financial contribution to the show is a fraction of the overall budget, it's not unthinkable that The Firm might be renewed, as the numbers are strong in Canada and all the other territories where it's airing (something like 117 total). A smaller US cable channel might even pick up the slack.

You never know. And remember this: most of the opinions you read on these message boards are just that; opinions. Much of it is unsupported speculation written by fans who don't really understand how the industry works or why some decisions are made. It's fun to speculate, sure, but don't take any of it as a given; always consider the source.

Speaking of considering sources, where did you get your source? And please, don't say "I know from first hand". Not good enough. The Firm is DONE filming all 22 episodes. They are not in production anymore. It's been wrapped up a long time ago. It's what I've gathered from interviews and such. In a recent interview with Josh (it was with George) he heavily implied that the show didn't work out (it got cancelled) and mentioned no where that they were still filming, in fact, he spoke in past tense about production (his whole experience with the show/filming) meaning, production for the show has ended. It's done. It would make no sense for Josh to tell everyone that the show is let down for audiences as well as for the actors too and to still be filming episodes.

Plus, NBC hasn't been airing episodes consecutively every week because they've done encores and repeats of certain shows like that Betty White show and Smash and with that being said, if The Firm has been airing every single week since the premiering of the show it would be on episode 18 this week. Most shows are done filming by the time it's close to the season finale wouldn't you agree? In addition, most shows already have half of the season's show shot and done by the time they premiere it on air.

Found some photos on flickr of some Behind the Scenes filming. Noticed, the photo is taken on 1/31/2012 in Toronto and guess which episode is they were filming? It's episode 13 where Ray went "undercover" as a paramedic. This is proof that they were well ahead in filming episodes and can conclude they have wrapped up the show already by this time.

That's correct, episode 113 shot from the 31st of January until February 9th.

I know because I'm looking at the one-liner schedule which I have because I work on the show. Episode 119 is wrapping up this week and the season wraps on the 18th of May.

No offense, but I think people are gonna take Josh Lucas's word over yours that production is already wrapped up.

reply

None taken, I wouldn't expect anyone to do so. But Josh did not say that filming had wrapped in the interview.

Here are a couple of good resources to check out for shoot dates in Toronto:

http://www.toronto.ca/tfto/pdf/currentlist.pdf
http://www.actratoronto.com/shooting/index.html
http://www.nabet700.com/aboutus/in-production/

For some reason, the ACTRA site has no wrap date and the TFTO site lists April 30 as the wrap - that was probably a target wrap date set a while back - but the NABET site has the correct wrap date.

You're right. Josh did not explicitly say filming has wrapped in the interview, however, he implied that it has, which cinched it. He talked about his whole experience with the show all in past tense as in everything is done and over with and he wants nothing more but to move on in further projects.

It seems that this discussion touches on the whole issue of 'sources' and 'speculation'. You seem to be convinced more by the assumptions you've made based on the verb tense used in an interview. On the other hand, you don't seem to be swayed by three independent, verifiable sources that list the show as currently in production as well as one first hand report.

It's quite fine if you don't believe that I know of what I speak, but I can assure you that I do and that I didn't successfully hack the websites of ACTRA Toronto, Nabet & the Toronto Film and Television Office just to pull a funny prank on a public message board.

What's odd to me is the willingness of some folks here to make statements of "fact" that have no basis in "fact" and their absolute unwillingness to let go of their wildly speculative beliefs despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Go figure. I've read assertions on this board that The Firm was cancelled back in January and that all the episodes where "in the can" last December. All speculation and grossly misinformed opinion presented as fact.

But if you still choose to be swayed by what you read into Josh's use of verb tense rather than to put some stock in ACTRA, Nabet, the TFTO or whatever I have to say, then just do the math:

You yourself state that episode 13 was shooting on January 31st. You're right about that - it was day 1 of the shoot for that episode. Now do the math - that was 12 weeks ago, or 60 shooting days. An episode takes 7 or 8 days to shoot depending on the particular demands of locations and whatnot. At most, you could squeeze 8 1/2 episodes between then and now - which would put you at episode 21 - at the most.

In any case, we're not there yet. It's episode 20 right now.

But honestly, why such intense skepticism? Does anyone really pretend to be cast or crew on these boards in order to fool complete strangers into believing stuff that's not true? That would have to be the dumbest, most pointless thing I could think of right now. I read what folks are saying here because I'm curious about reaction to a project on which I've spent a lot of time working. I don't offer my own opinion, but when I see something being erroneously offered as "fact", I endeavor to correct it for the purpose of accuracy. Why would I be making this stuff up?
