No Nimoy?

I was actually surprised not to see him in this. Of course, Shatner has a documentary from a few years ago with Nimoy (Mind Meld: Secrets Behind the Voyage of a Lifetime), and he interviewed him on Shatner's Raw Nerve. Still, Spock was Captain of the Enterprise in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan!I think he should have appeared in the film. I wonder if he was asked and turned it down?

reply

I'm not a hundred percent on this but didn't Nimoy say that the new Star Trek was the absolute last time he was doing something Trek related? .... I could be completely wrong on this but I'm not sure...

reply

Could be, but they did not even mention Nimoy. That seems weird to me.
But all of this stuff is manipulated and "Hollywood" ... maybe Shatner just
was afraid he would be upstaged. To his credit he went into the real feelings
he had about how he was "derided" for Kirk.

I could see that, but it also sort of comes full circle in that Shatner did it!
Without Kirk, they could not have been Spock, or Star Trek. He did not have
the confidence to realize that he did a really good job on Star Trek.

There is something in Shatner a kind of oblivious, scheming, conniving
type-A ham that is so funny. He would not be who he is without it, and I
think people are OK with that, but it seems to really affect him.

Maybe he thinks he can actually be a character in literature?

Maybe there just was not time for Nimoy, or maybe he wanted to leave
something unexplored for the next movie.

It's a treat to see how normal and human Shatner is, that he is known for
Captain Kirk, and that is something really great that he did not seem to
know. He's very sensitive, yet sincere, or wants to portray himself that way.

It was a nice movie ... he could have had Nimoy in there for a little bit.
I hope at some point we get Nimoy being as honest as Shatner.

I agree, at least one cameo or short hello with him would have been appropriate for sure. I also liked how human Shatner was. You could really see the smooth, suave guy persona that covers up and at the same time highlights his insecurities. I loved that he referred to every Trek woman he talked to as the most beautiful in the Star Trek series because not only is it a ladies man move but it could also be seen as a subconscious attempt to ensure they all like him equally or that he feels they all need to be respected for being women. The ONLY thing I was not fond of was the background piano. Although the movie definitely had a sad tone occasionally the music was constantly somber and kind of out there.

"but they did not even mention Nimoy."

Not true. Scott Bakula specifically mentioned how he wished his show had been able to capture the camaraderie between Nimoy and Shatner... there were several other references as well, e.g. clips of the guy in the new Star Trek film portraying Spock.

reply

Well, technically, that is not mentioning Nimoy ... that is referring to interaction between the characters Kirk and Spock. ;-)

reply

The show is called Captains, not Science Officers.

reply

Spock was a Captain during one of the movies.

reply

Spock was a Captain in ST II-VI.

When Kirk was demoted down from admiral to captain, Spock deferred to him as the senior officer.

reply

Well, you're still wrong, because Shatner HIMSELF mentioned Nimoy, by name, when he was discussing how Nimoy did so much with so little a role, and how he had been nominated for an Emmy and gotten a lot of critical praise. You must not have been paying attention because it was very powerful and revealing.

I'm not wrong? So what, he mentioned Nimoy. Powerful and revealing is ACTING!

reply

Nimoy didn't swear off all things Trek. He was doing conventions up until this year. At 80, that's quite a bit of work I must say. I don't think such a big deal should be made out of it. When the TNG movies were released on Blu Ray awhile back one of the special features was something called The Capatains Summit. It was hosted by Whoopi Goldberg & she interviewed Shatner, Nimoy, Stewart, & Frakes all together at once. Now that was cool. The Captains would've been great with Nimoy. It's still great without him.

reply

He also mentioned that he was brought in to "fix" the show that wasn't working, in part because it included a smiling Spock. Something tells me that Nemoy would have something to say about that interpretation.

reply

I would verify this. He was mentioned several times, and by Shatner as well.

reply

I think Nimoy would have upstaged all the other captains. I felt it was classier all around to just leave him out of it. Including Nimoy would have made this an entirely different documentary I think.

reply

"Without Kirk, they [sic] could not have been Spock, or Star Trek."

There were both Spock and "Star Trek" in 1964 when the first pilot was filmed, two years before there was any Kirk.

i was waiting for someone to leave this comment!

reply

It's quite possible that he didn't want to be upstaged by Nimoy and let's not forget that The Captains was largely about The Shat rather than the other ST captains.

Remember that Nimoy did direct two of the critically acclaimed (and successful) ST movies however he turned down the next movie. The next movie, which Shatner directed, turned out to be one of the biggest flops in ST film history.

Shatner himself also mentioned that Nimoy won awards and accolades yet he, as Kirk, didn't get anything.

not reading any comments above - fanboys are annoying - captains allows this to be a shatner show - his cash, etc -- minimal credits to GR productions - whatever their called
