Advanced Screening Opinion

Just saw this at an advanced screening and wow was this terrible. Its been awhile since I saw a movie that I disliked so much. Our screening group was told it was from the makers of Rango. Please dont let that sucker you into this film. Rango was very adult themed, heavier stuff, and I really enjoyed it for that. This film is absolute lowest common denominator humor from the get-go. It relies almost completely on slapstick comedy and the character's "funny" faces. Its as if this movie was not only made for children but also by them.

I'm going to make this short because I don't care enough about this film. Main character is Timo, a pathetic, near-retarded Roman saved from vesuvius by a gladiator-trainer type guy. Timo is lazy and thinks he's hilarious. His childhood love comes back from being at college in Greece but is wedlocked to the best gladiator in Rome who happens to be a jerk. Timo acts like an idiot and gets kicked out of his house and vows to redeem himself by becoming a great gladiator. He meets up with a possible goddess/gladiator trainer named Diana who tries to teach Timo. He goes back for a big tournament and you know the rest. Along the way are one dimensional stereotypes of other gladiators, good and bad. Animals who act like people and always go for the cheapest laugh. Wayyyyyy too much slapstick. And some disney-like, magic potion, nonsense, side-plot thrown in.

I will say the version I saw wasn't complete. The animation wasn't finished completely, the music wasnt completely done, and some of the voice actors will be changed. I have seen animated films in many stages of completeion and understand what will change and what won't. This film is much too childish and insanely cliche riden. Really seems like they tried to fit in as many cliches as possible and then beat them all to death by repeating them over and over and over. They actually must think they are original, or that we won't notice. The main character was horrible. One of the most annoying, idiotic and lame charicatures ever put on screen.

I'm sorry this is lazy writing but I just couldn't help but say how bad this is, and I don't want to spend much more time making this sound nice. I really can't even go much more into how bad it was because frankly it would take me a long time and i don't want to type that much lol. I will be happy to answer any more specific questions if you want. Suffice it to say my prediction for Rottentomatoes is literally in the 5%-20% range. Just terrible, terrible stuff.

you should put this comment in the review section.

Yeah, this sounds like a review confirming everything I assumed/suspected just from looking at the poster and synopsis! Can't believe Paramount greenlit this and bothered to release it on home video. Seems like a totally horrible, pointless mess--like one of those low-budget movies that tries to borrow themes and character designs from good ones in order to steal the money of some harried or clueless parents, for kids who don't yet know better.

🐩 Power!

what's worse is that this was in theaters! .... how the f@#k would anybody be so stupid to release something as s@#$%y-looking as this on the big screen?! Iginio Straffi did the same with those god awful Winx Club movies. is he retarded or something?

I cannot begin to imagine what kind of terrible week at the movies it must have been for any theater operator to even consider wasting one room on an abomination of this type. Thankfully I haven't seen it displayed at any of the theaters I've been to or passed by...
