Manic Pixie Dream Girl

Bette's character struck me as another rendition of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, in that she bursts on the scene in a flash and immediately proceeds to improve everyone's life. Not that I have a problem with her character, or the concept, but in this film (which I really liked, in spite of its flaws) it seemed way too easy. Anyone else see her that way?

"She's, like, a biscuit older than me..."

Sure, but I found her incredibly obnoxious. I almost couldn't finish the movie because I just wanted the bitch slap her. Hey, help yourself to mom's room, walk around the house in your underwear, move yourself in, and force yourself on both sons. She was like a hyper active kid you're baby sitting that you can't wait to give back - except she wouldn't leave.

That is exactly what I came to this page to see -- if it was as blatant to everybody else as it was to me, that Bette was the poster girl for "Manic Pixie Dream Girl". It was extreme. She was just the magical solution to everything and everybody, seemingly without flaws. It made the story almost surreal.

And then of course, she became a complete jerk, thus ruining any remaining appeal.

She's more like the manic pixie whore.

I totally agree. I came to this board for that very reason and to scold the director and screenwriter--who are both women and should know better than to write such a flimsy female character who is basically an object. Shame on you!!!
