The ending is ridiculous

Why would Mattei let Kaminsky at the end ? Even if he learns that Kaminsky killed Mattei's son in self defense, Kaminsky is still the one who killed the members from Mattei's team during the robbery. So we are supposed to believe a cop will not even try to arrest a cop killer he pursued during the whole movie ?

reply

The question is, did Mattei know that Kaminsky was involved with the robbery group from the start? Was he pursuing him from the outset? If so and he wanted to avenge his son's death (whose photo he looks at long before we know his son was deployed with Kaminsky in Afghanistan) then this becomes one cop's personal quest for vengeance. Hence why he speaks so abruptly to his captain who suggests a safer way of apprehending the group.

That's put an interesting new spin on it. I still don't get a few things though and some of the plot developments and character actions still seem bizarre.

Why was the second sniper on the roof at the end? Why would Mattei risk civilian lives by taking pot shots with the sniper rifle he obviously hasn't been trained to use? I also don't really get the strange reveal that the doctor is a crazed sadistic killer in the second half? A good looking film but a bit bonkers

Here's my tuppence worth:

Why was the second sniper on the roof at the end?
Was this second one a police officer? My memory is a bit hazy on that now.
Why would Mattei risk civilian lives by taking pot shots with the sniper rifle he obviously hasn't been trained to use?
Why not? To let the doctor walk away is to risk lives. Besides it was one of the funniest moments of the film. Sometimes the French seem to inject humour for its own sake.
I also don't really get the strange reveal that the doctor is a crazed sadistic killer in the second half?
It seems to be a plot device that serves to bring Mattei and Kaminsky together as the good guys against a third, common enemy. Otherwise only one of them would have been able to walk away at the end. Secondly, and most importantly, it allows Oliver Gourmet to flourish. His doctor sadist and serial killer is at once horrific and funny in the darkest sense.

But yeh overall the plot is bonkers however the acting, especially from Gourmet and Kassovitz, was second to none.

Your explanation clears up some issues that had me scratching my head.

Too many things going on by too many characters, not enough loose ends tied up and overall, not worth trying to figure out.

reply

Sounds as though you didn't enjoy it overall. What did you think of Gourmet and Kassovitz?

Keep silent unless what you are going to say is more important than silence.

reply

More disappointed, I guess, particularly for an Auteuil film. It kept my interest, though.

Gourmet was great as a bad guy... big difference from his role in "Home".

Agreed. The ending had me scratching my head.
Why was the second sniper on the roof at the end?
I think we're expected to believe Kaminski hired him as a decoy. It wasn't a cop as one of the other posters mentioned. It was another sniper who was wounded by one of the police snipers. I know, it does seem dumb. Kaminski was supposedly the best. I don't know why he didn't just do the job himself. like Mattei said he would.
Why would Mattei risk civilian lives by taking pot shots with the sniper rifle he obviously hasn't been trained to use?
That was absolutely bizarre. I think we're expected to believe Mattei had kind of lost the plot by this stage. He leaves the captain injured and alone in the police car with the doctor, who promptly escapes on cue and gives the captain another beating. Then Mattei starts taking pot shots on a busy street with a rifle he has no business using. I'm sure after the events of this film he'll be busted down to traffic warden at the local primary school. He ends up with no credibility any more and has to be rescued by Kaminski anyway.

And don't ask me how Kaminski just happened to be on that street, ready to intercept the doctor. The all-seeing lookout was possibly just waiting for the right moment to strike.

Let me say at the outset, that the story is full of contrivances and a movie that began in an interesting fashion, ended up sinking under the weight of its own self-imposed twists.
But:

Kaminsky is still the one who killed the members from Mattei's team during the robbery.
I don't think he did kill anyone early on...he wounds them. Have a close look. They are all hit in the arm or leg. He has the captain cold on the roof-top, but lets him live. He's not a cop killer. Even in the police conference before the attempted arrest of the robbers, the comment is made that they virtually have no history of violence, which was a little weird, considering what followed. I think the movie could have been clearer in the wake of the foiled arrest, but I think I'm right in saying that at no time is Kaminski ever actually accused of murder.
Why would Mattei let Kaminsky (go) at the end ?

In the end too he saves Mattei's life. Let's face it we all knew Mattei wouldn't shoot him in the back.

The second shooter on the roof at the end was Eric the guy (with the migraines) we were supposed to believe Vincent had shot in the car earlier in the film. He was acting as a decoy for Vincent (probably out of guilt for allowing Vincent's lawyer girlfriend to get killed by Franck.)
